Replaced the old wood deck in my backyard this year. There never was a building permit for the old deck, which wasn't built by me. So, I needed to get a change in occupancy permit for my house. When you apply for a change in occupancy permit, the city inspectors have to check your house for carbon monoxide and smoke detectors, even if all you're doing is constructing an outdoor deck. I had the carbon monoxide detectors but I needed to get four more smoke detectors to meet code besides the two I already had. Wouldn't you know the smoke detectors were just on sale at Costco last month. I hate that chit. It always happens like that.

That's living in he city for ya. Any construction requires s permit. This inspector was a good guy. He didn't give us any trouble even though we built the deck bigger than what was on the permit. The inspectors actually inspect wood decks fairly thoroughly. There have been several collapses with fatalities. Too many so-called contractors doing shoddy jobs.
