What was even weirder was that the tail seemed to feel the pain of the bite.

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.” ― Samuel Adams

Yeah. I noticed the same thing. Definitely a lesson learned on my part.
I have picked up snakes that I've killed while they're still writhing. I don't think I'll do that anymore.

Reptiles don't die completely until the sun goes down.

I thought the same thing. I would think it would need its brain to feel but it sure seemed to know what was going on.

yes, i killed a rattler yesterday in fact. ended up catching it and killing it because my boss's dog was running around and i didn't want it to get bit, otherwise i would have just tossed it in the brush. after i cut off the head i was explaining to my coworker that you have to get rid of the head or it can still bite and inject, and just as i said it, the damn thing tried to bite me. the guy has faced off with a grizzly but hates snakes, go figure.
