Haven't had a cat since I was a kid, but from what I remember it's easy.

Place the cats in the box and they will just know where to go. Cats like to be clean so they instinctively use the box when they know where it is.

You might have problems if it isn't cleaned daily.

A box with a lid, and regular cleaning will eliminate bad smells...

"Becoming a Pet Owner."

From the photos O2M has posted of himself. I would have bet he had a couple of mean old hound dogs sitting on his front porch. Right next to his Rocking Chair.

I don't enjoy having cats indoors but my mother does and she has two cats. She has one of those fancy automatic litter boxes and her house never smells like cat litter like some houses.

If I ever had to live with a cat indoors I would have one of these.

The trick to having cats is to invest money in them. Had a small kitten show up at the house the day a good friend died, and I couldn't not feed "Earl," who then, of course, became "my" cat. When he nearly grown I figured neutering him would be the responsible course, and he was dead in the road with a week of the operation. Then my first grandson (a position of great power) brought a kitten his mother wouldn't let him keep to our house. "Joe" was another good, low maintenance outdoor cat right up to the point where I shelled out another $65 to have him neutered and he quickly became another road-killed cat.

To suggest that they threw themselves into traffic out of despair and depression over the operation would be speculation.

Well, let me explain. If you don't live in the city, the cat has one purpose in live, to kill rodents. There needs to be no in house toilet. Keep them on the back porch or somewhere similar where they can get out on their own.
Starting the whole litterbox, live inside thing is just asking for trouble. Since you have no experience with cats I'll say this, "no one owns cats!" You will understand more as time goes by.

This advice is from an experienced cat breeder of over 300 kittens and 9 years of experience.
They like to burry their piss and shit, so as long as there is a place for them to do it thats where they will go. Dogs live cat shit though so keep the liter where only the cats can get to.

Gaddy you are mostly right. i have my share of mangy old mutts but they are not pets they are more like employees. my meathead lab does his best to become a pet. i give in to him more and more each week.

thats how i feel. had two mommy cats at the one farm that got ran over. 9 kittens total only 3 left. i have been pressured into making house cats out of them. i can not overrule the decision. i did a count last year one morning while doing feed truck chores, i stopped counting barn yard cats when i got to 100, thats a bunch but its spread out over a few farm yards.

We had 2 to 3 female cats from the time I was 4 till I was 13. Each one popped out about a dozen kittens each year. We somehow managed to get rid of every one with a free kittens sign out front. Bob hates us. :-D

We had regulars that would come get a cat every year. No idea what they did with them, but once they were gone I didn't care.
