Still haven't figured out where the hell Westmont is, but if it's anywhere near Omaha good luck. Public land gets hunted pretty hard and private land is all but leased up. Not saying there aren't birds to be killed, but it ain't easy pickins.

99% of my hunting is done on public land and it's excellent. I rarely ever even see another hunter, and when I do,I usually know them quite well and there is usually lots of room and birds to go around. The other 1% is field hunting for geese and it's hit or miss.

I do all my waterfowl hunting in public water. Lots of people on most days...just keep an open mind.

This trick is to think where all the duck dynasty lovers will be. Predominately around the edges. Go where no man has gone before for opening light and you will prevail over the slouches.

Some of my best hunts have been on public land. Some of my worst hunts have been on private duck marshes designed to hold ducks. I hunt both public land and private land and will try to go to where I can find the birds.

Other then the occasional headaches dealing with the public. State and federal waterfowl refuges can provide some fantastic hunting opportunities. I mainly hunt public land on average two to three days a week. Once you learn the areas Limits aren't a surprise they are the norm.

I would say my situation is about the same as FC. 99% public and I do well enough to keep me going back.
Back when my son still lived in ORegon, I would hunt private more for geese because their food is usually on private but, I don't chase geese anymore.
We have millions of acres here that are public but, not necessarily WMAs.
I suspect a lot of people are answering the question with regard to WMA , not just public land in general.
We have a pretty high percentage of land here that is public compared to the eastside of the country.

I rarely shoot public land, but I have a buddy (pgquackstacker) who shoots public land almost exclusively, he does great. From talking to him I know he puts in some serious time scouting and working on his calling. It pays off. Here are a few pictures he has sent me of some public land hunts he has been on.

Here is my public land tip of the day. Here in California they post averages of birds taken from each blind or assigned pond everyday. First draw a decent reservation and examine the board that tells you what blinds or ponds shoot the best. This eliminates the need to scout or know anything other than how to get to the pond. 2. Bring the biggest shells possible, you got to get a crack at them before the pond next door does. 3. Have a loud call, you must call over everyone that's how you become top dog out there. 4. Work on your public land head nod, when you encounter another public land warrior a sub par head nod just won't do!

Hahahahahahaha!!!!

So quick question on #4- For someone to be considered a serious refuge badass, do you nod your head up or down? Does it matter if you are wearing a hat? I might try some public land and I would like to be taken seriously.

Nod half way up and all the way down. This tells the other party that you acknowledge his existence but you would still fuck his mother if given the chance! Hats must be pro fit but a skull cap is recommended.

This is the exact same as the WMAs here.
But there is a big difference between WMAs and general public land. public hunting...hard work, but good shoots to be had. WMAs...comical bickering between 70 hunters over 11 ducks.
