Another year, another set of "what the fucks"

Just best with me this year- I vent here so I don't flip out in real life.
So Layniebug brings gone her homework for the week on Fridays, and we go through it then, after its corrected. This was the one that stands out:
ImageUploadedByTapatalk1378498416.141779.jpg
While helping her do it, I had no idea what the other line was for, so told her just flip them and write it again. Well, we were just cracking it over, and she told me that they couldn't just "know" a math problem, they had to use "doubles or near doubles to explain them". Whatever the hell that is.
So now, it's "the process". What the fuck is so wrong with knowing 5+4=9? I don't WANT her to be bogged down with some nonsensical "if 5+5=10, then 4 is one less than 5, so 5+4 must be one less than 5+5, so the answer is 9" bullshit.
That's nonsense.
And the spelling test was worse. 20 words, which ranged from "I" and "if" to "happiness". What the fuck kind of pattern is that? School is simply somewhere she has to be anymore. The learning is done here after school, when we read phonics lists of words for time, and practice addition and subtraction tables. Fuck a "process".

it's not just at the elementary level anymore either Jim, I am having the same problem in Pre Calculus. I'm very close to just dropping the class because the instructor doesn't actually teach shit. It's very different from what I took 5 years ago.

Do it, all the snatch is in remedial.

It just irritates me that knowing 4+3=7 isn't "right" anymore. It's better to have to know some feel good bullshit.

That doesn't make any sense. How do you know they know 5+5=10? Stupid reasoning. A 6 year old isn't going to be cheating in class on math homework.

I know. So it's ok too assume they have 4+4 or 5+5 memorized, and just "know" it, but "just knowing" 5+4 is somehow wrong, or too difficult. Next time she has 3+3, I'm gonna have her write "6, because 3+2=5, and 3 is 1 more than 2". Because in actuality, that's the same damn thing they're doing.

I should've worded that differently. Assuming 5+5 is easier than 5+4 is just stupid, and makes no logical sense.
There. I feel better now.

I am going to wholeheartedly endorse that type of smartass, outside the box thinking. Because hey, jack, they want the kids to "think" instead of "know", right?
"Juan and Rosaria went to the park, and saw 3 people walking and 2 people jogging- including Juan and Rosaria, how many people were at the park?"
"5. Because illegals don't count as people."
And her teacher has horrible handwriting. That's a pet peeve of mine. There's no excuse at all for an elementary school teacher to form letters like a 10 year old. She was older, maybe 50, and I had high hopes for this year, as I assumed she was experienced, and had maybe raised a couple kids herself. Maybe she has, and is just hamstrung by the curriculum. We'll see.
But I'm telling you, the more I think about it, the more that nonsensical spelling list and test irritates me. Layniebug did well, 17 out of 20, but that damn thing was all over the map, no rhyme or reason. So they want to teach "patterns" in math, but not in reading. Makes sense. Just pull 20 random words out of the dictionary and slap them on a spelling list. Gotcha.

The thing that would piss me off is - we're going to tell kids in math class that dragon flies are animals, and teach some black magic voodoo way of finding the correct answer.
Then the little bastard is going to go to his biology class and flunk when he incorrectly classifies the dragonflies as animals.
Same thing with the patterns in math/spelling.
Why not structure all that shit so it builds on each other instead of being in conflict??? Cuz there's not a ounce of common sense collectively in that system.
Your children are being taught by educated idiots.

Precisely. I wasn't kidding a bit when I said the learning takes place at home. Our neighbors homeschool, and give me access to the site they have access to, where I print off a bunch of lessons regarding phonetics, working on speed, and mathematics, which was really just a printed off addition and subtraction table to save me the time of making them myself. Layniebug loves it- she gets the timer out to see if she can read the whole sheet of words in less than a minute, and we try and see how many addition or subtraction problems she can solve in a minute. We do this several times a night, and have since about July.
At the end of last year, her math was for shit. Now, she zooms through her homework in minutes, and then has to sit and tolerate a bunch of lessons in class regarding "doubles" and "near doubles", and "let's take a look at the many ways we can find hints to help ourselves see what 6+2 equals". How about "6+2 equals 8", fuckers, and call it a day. Then practice, practice, practice. She can add instantly up to 10+10, and subtraction isn't far behind. Know why? Because repetition works. We have agonized over a way to get them in private school, but just haven't figured it out yet. So we make do. Here's a pattern for you- teachers are getting shittier each year.
The very first spelling test (which she got a 6 out of 22 on, by the way) was a test on the names of all the students in class. I wonder why she got an F? Maybe because a second grader doesn't know how to spell "Mikaela", "DeJordan", "Aimee", "Lukas", and so on. And no, I'm not making any of those up. What kind of bullshit test is that?

Hell, I seriously doubt I or anyone here could spell any of the weird fucking names people give kids these days.

A buddies wife went through school to be a teacher because he really liked teaching kids and helping them. She only taught for a year because she didn't like that they were so strict on what and how everything had to be taught to the kids. She said if that is the way they want them to teach things now, she won't do it.
This is another problem I see with their curriculum, the teachers that really want to teach and help kids are not going to put up with it. So you get stuck with someone that just goes with it, and doesn't realize what it does to the kids.

yeah my girlfriend is questioning whether she even wants to be a teacher anymore and it's only her second week.

My wife teaches, she says the way it works and all the hoops to jump through its far from about helping the kids. closer to babysitting.

I'd be careful if I were you Goldie, I think Layniebug could take you. At least that's where I'd put my money, if it came down to it.

that is some bizarre shit to ask a child. nothing like over complicating math for no reason

i seriously think that is a correct answer.

Shit like this is the reason my Math Teaching degree will likely never be put to use. The way they force you to teach kids these days is fucking ridiculous. And we wonder why kids hate math, it's because knowing how to do it isn't what you're tested on. You're tested on how closely you follow what they want you to do. God forbid we let the kids figure out how to do something on their own, in a way that works for them. Hell, for that matter, that's all math is anyways.

As long as they come up with the right answer what does it matter how they got it? JP came home with math problems and after every one they had the question "did you have to regroup" with a yes or no they had to circle. What the hell is regrouping? I don't understand the way they teach math and its to the point I can't help a first grader do simple addition and subtraction problems.

Same here. There is no reason, and no excuse, for a 44 year old man to not know EXACTLY what the question wants to know on a second grade math worksheet. If I have to sit there and scratch my head and ponder, trying to decipher just what the fuck they're asking, that's wrong.
In all fairness, I probably should go a little easier on the teachers. They are handed the curriculum and told what to teach. But the thing that keeps me form going easy on them is their constant self-portrayal as student-loving altruists, who only have the best interests on the "learning" at heart. Well, then act like it. School teachers go on strike for their own pay. They go on strike for their own benefits. They go on strike for their evaluation practices. But not once, not EVER, have I heard of teachers going on strike against what they feel is a crappy curriculum or lesson standards. And until they do, all talk of "I know, we don't like the way it's taught either" is just lip service which they may blow out their ass. Because frankly, I don't believe them.

would you believe that i missed points on my quiz this last week because i put a circle with a line through it because you can't do the problem, and it was wrong because i didn't leave it blank? i shit you not, i lost 20% for that.
