Reloading is good for the soul...

Well, since it was such a bluebird day to do any good duck hunting, I decided to clean around the house. Got that checked off and done by 10 AM. So I spent the rest of the day getting shells loaded up for next trap season. I had forgotten how relaxing it is to sit down and roll your own. Now with 2,500 loaded up, 2,500 more to go. Hopefully I'll find another day like today to get that project finished.

You loaded 2,500 shells in one day?

I've never reloaded, but that seems like a ton...

When god gives you 7 hours of fuck-around time, I use it either hunting or reloading. I go through easily 10k shells a trap season alone that includes practice and tournaments. It costs me about $200 for 2,500 shells. For the cheap Promo loads from Wally World, 2,500 shells would cost about $650-$700. Big difference.

I'm not questioning reloading, and the savings. 2,500 shells in a day just seems like a lot.

You're averaging about one shell every 10 seconds, over a 7 hour period.

Again, I've never reloaded so I don't know if that's normal, or really impressive.

Either way, I'm glad you enjoyed your day.

Depends who you are. There are some guys who use Spolar and PW loaders that can crank out 500 an hour. Even on a single stage it's possible. But what I do is deprive all the hulls at 1 time, then prime them. Considering if I did it a couple days in advance. Then I add powder, wad, and shot. The MEC pre-crimp station on single stages, especially the newer ones are just to me. I just skip that station and crimp the hull completely.

When I used to do trap loads, I could reload a box in about 8 minutes, moving briskly and crisply, but not trying to break any records.

A shell every ten seconds means a box every 4 minutes or so. 15 boxes (375 rounds) and hour.

I suppose it's possible, this is the internet, after all. Sure would not be enjoyable though. Going that fast, you're gonna get your finger sooner or later. And an hour of crying is really gonna set you back.

I kill ducks on bluebird days, reload in the evenings!

I also find reloading relaxing, never at that pace or level though.

Back quite a few years when I was shooting trap, I had a Posness-Warren progressive reloader. With a hole cut in the reloading bench and a 5 gallon bucket under the bench, two guys feeding the machine could easily reload 500 + rounds an hour. It took as long to put the loaded shells into boxes as it did to reload them. Keeping the shot and powder hoppers full and primers in the tray took more time than anything else.

When I go duck hunting on blue bird days, I either fuck with the coots, trying to catch them or I shoot some weird duck that doesn't taste worth a shit. Then I hit myself upside the head and think, "You idiot, you need to be doing something productive, not being an idiot in mud and water dancing around like a yardbird."
