How much do you spend scouting?

Postby Olly » Mon Oct 14, 2013 7:41 am

How much money do you guys spend scouting for ducks every year? I haven't even really started scouting for ducks but since I'm new to the area I've been out scouting for spots to go scouting once the migration gets here.

I'm probably about $400 into gas just getting out there and finding spots.

i dont keep track of gas money, but i drive a ton. after every hunt we go for a scout just about. so factor in bloody marys, pipe tobacco and gas and your looking at thousands.

I don't scout very much for ducks since I hunt private ponds and the ducks are basically all migrators. But we usually spend a couple hundred driving around before dove season looking for birds.

I usually take a trip out to a few different spots on the bay, and check out the WMAs by my house. Just kinda check water conditions on the bay, and the cover in the WMAs. Then I hunt/scout after the season starts. Don't really keep track of the actual cost.

In a lot of states now that is illegal and is considered stealing. I was trying to find the news article but I did read a few times about people being arrested for it.

That's just silly. If they turn their TV up too loud and I listen to it through the wall, am I stealing their cable?

It's not silly. You pay for a certain amount of bandwidth each month and if someone else is using it they are taking part of what you pay for.

I don't pay for a certain amount of bandwidth. Lots of people don't. Are you sure that Goldies's neighbor does?

So.... Yea I usually spend a ton of money scouting each year and this year is going to be even more trying to learn a new area.

I'm lucky that the delta is only a few miles away. I drove 45 minutes today but found some good deer spots I think.

If you are driving around in you boat drinking beer, does that count as scouting? Do you add or subtract the cost of the beer from the cost of the gas to arrive at the scouting cost. If you find the ducks early in a scouting trip and you park the boat and kill a few ducks does that still count as scouting?

Nice thing about scouting in and around the bay as opposed to rice fields is that if you see ducks going in somewhere, you can hunt them the next morning. In the rice country, if you see ducks grinding in somewhere it probably isn't on property you have permission to hunt and you have wasted a perfectly good hard-on.

To keep on topic, I don't know, it is all part of the game and I am for sure not going to post what I spend on duck hunting every year.

I would guess I spend $20 a week for gas while scouting during the season. Will spend a couple hundred bucks to run out west before pheasant season. My brother went last weekend, report was better than last year, but still sucks very bad.
