Here, the teachers have off at least one day a month during the school year, in addition to any holidays. No shit.

You should spend the day giving him keyboard lessons.

I'm just giving you a hard time oneal, it generally means you've been accepted here. You've got to admit it was the perfect setup.
Btw, I'm typing the way I talk and I work with my hands too.

No such thing as fun on Monday. Especially not when I'm on my way to buy some new tires on Monday. Fuck.

oneal, my girlfriend is a teacher so i get to see a tiny bit of what goes on on their side (doesn't mean i know it all). my observations are that a teacher is one person who's job is to instruct ~150 kids throughout a day. They could probably do that, if they weren't constantly being interrupted by little shitheads who can't shut up. they end up spending probably an average of an hour and 20 minutes out of a 6.5 hour school day trying to get students on track. take into account lunch and it's only 6 hours of education time, then take into account that they move classes every 50 minutes, so in reality kids only spend 5 hours a day learning, but wait, we still need to account for discipline time, so subtract 1.33 hours, so kids actually only get 3.6 hours of beneficial classroom time. Teachers have those inservice days to meet as a staff to make decisions for the school and other things, most teachers would rather not have inservice days but it's a time to get things done. sometimes they have those days to gain credits for their continued education that they have to update every 5 years or lose their license. not sure about other teachers but currently my girlfriend often stays up until well past midnight grading papers, this is nearly every night, so she's logging 8+ hours outside of school unpaid to get work taken care of.
and yeah, when you look at how dumb most kids are, it's because they don't learn anything in school, because the system is fucked up. teachers want more money because there aren't enough teachers out there. the ones that are out there have class sizes that are absolutely unmanageable and not conducive to a learning environment. also, a lot of parents out there today just have a total disconnect to their kid's life.
as i said, these are just my very limited observations. i think smaller class sizes alone would help quite a bit in more effective education.

Teachers generally work 180-185 days a year. They typically get a week off at Thanksgiving and two weeks off for Christmas - New Year. With national and school holidays it is usually only once a year that teachers actually work a five day week for over 4 weeks at a stretch. Usually, teachers make as much or more than law enforcement personnel but they get usually 55-60 days a year for summer vacation. Teachers work days are usually 7 1/2 hours and contact time with students 250 - 300 minutes a day. A portion of the teachers that are supposed to teach our children are teaching only because they didn't know what else to do, they weren't the sharpest knife in the drawer when they went to school and the work is easy (because they don't have to produce) and the pay is actually pretty good for the benefits.
In California the magic numbers for retirement are age 60 with 30 years of teaching.
In non union and non tenure states or school districts, there is some pressure for teacher performance in order for teachers to keep their jobs. Pressure in union / tenure districts too but it takes years to dismiss a poor teacher in these districts. Teacher shortcomings are usually blamed on the students (a low group) or their parents (low socio-economic group) both of which are at least somewhat true but the best education seems to come with portions of the population that have high expectations (for children and teachers) and hold the school boards to higher standards and expectations.
