Can this be fixed by removing the butt pad and tightening that nut?

You'll need a 9/16" (I think) deep socket and a drive extension. Might check the shims, I think there is a little stud that locks it in place when tightened down.

NO! You cannot just tighten the nut and fix this.
9/10 the recoil tube is also backing out of the receiver. You'll need to remove the butt pad, thread the tube back into the receiver, and then replace the stock and tighten the nut. The "tube" end and the nut end are threaded opposite directions so when you tighten the nut against the stock retainer shim it puts tension on the front of the tube at the receiver and locks the whole thing in place.
HK models use an 11mm socket to remove the nut, post HK models are a 13mm socket.
Make sure you either use a nylock nut or a lock washer when you put it back together.

I'll bet even money the nut is still tight on the "stem" end of the recoil tube.

it is. But the tube on that end is cracked where it's threaded

Actually have owned this gun for 9-10 years and haven't had a single problem. Keep it clean on the inside, beat up on the outside. According to some on this forum, I must have lucked out.
