It's almost here!

Sometimes, you just have to say "Fuck you duck-hunting, I shall return in December!" Two more days till the general deer and elk season starts here in MT! Got my pack ready, .25-06 Remington and the .270 Winchester are ready to rip, got three deer tags, and luckily two elk tags this year! Hopefully I can get a buck and a fat doe before the snow flies up Newlan Creek, then try and get my two elk. Then maybe try and get another doe the last 4 days of the season. That is my plan anyways. The Little Belts are a dream to hunt IMO especially with the family ranch bordering Forest Service and the Castle Mountain Ranch. The nice thing about the CM Ranch is people who get permission to hunt on there only get three, unchosen days out of the hunting season, and are only allowed to shoot cows. It always sends those big bulls down into the Charcoal, Pistol, and Albrite for safety (Most of it is on Chapman Ranch property). I'm confident I can accomplish a full freezer of high protein, low-fat meat in under 37 days! :?

I have a feeling it's going to be a good year for elk. I was scouting around there about 10 days ago, and jumped 2 bulls out of their bed. Looked to be nice 5x5s. Got back to the pickup and drove about 2 miles, and had about 15 head going across the road, and they weren't jumpy or anything. That'll probably be a different story coming come 2-3 days. But then again, 95% of the people that hunt by the ranch are road hunters, and have seldom knowledge of the area. Doesn't bother me a damn bit. Most of the time, they pack up and leave after their little 7 day camp opening weekend. Thanks for the 'good luck's'!

Really dont know what to do at this point, will be trying to buy a scope this weekend and hopefully hunting next week. Really down about it though becuase I was really looking forward to the opener after all the prep.

Ended up getting out. Didn't shoot anythig but I hiked way back, about 8-9 miles and saw two of the biggest mule deer bucks I've ever seen. Will be back ASAP.

This last weekend went quite well. Saturday morning, I jumped 15 head of elk out of their bed at first light, but none gave me a chance to even put my gun up. They vanished like all hell broke loose. Sunday, I shot a nice 5x5 bull. I'll post pictures either today, tomorrow, or over the weekend when I am in Portland.

I've not yet killed one without a bullet first leaving the barrel. Shoot till they're down!

The first shot was a bit to high, the second while he was running perpendicular to me was put at the base of neck to stop him, and the third was a little bit higher when he was struggling to get up.
