Read the book "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer. It's about climbing Everest, I think in the 90's, when a bunch of climbers died on the mountain. The author was one of the people climbing that year and had to walk away from people who were not going to survive. It's a really amazing book and explains a lot of the issues experienced in high altitude climbing.

x2. It's an awesome story. But I still maintain that those who do that shit are basically juvenile, insecure little people. I don't have to prove shit to anybody, least of all myself. You want to prove you "got what it takes"? Go work a couple jobs, support and raise a family, give people a reason to respect you. "I climbed a big mountain" would get you ridiculed right out of my house.
