Now that's fucked up. I can't imagine leaving someone behind, even if dead. I guess it is something that is just ground into a soldiers head, "leave no one behind".

Yeah, I was never in military, but I got to agree with you. If you can hear him you gotta at least try and get him off the mountain. I know its gotta be one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. But if they past by him just to make it to the summit. That's horseshit.

Read the book "Into Thin Air" by Jon Krakauer. It's about climbing Everest, I think in the 90's, when a bunch of climbers died on the mountain. The author was one of the people climbing that year and had to walk away from people who were not going to survive. It's a really amazing book and explains a lot of the issues experienced in high altitude climbing.

I have absolutely no interest in climbing Everest. F that! For what, to say you did it, lost two toes to frostbite, have troubles breathing, and losing a friend in the process? No thanks, id rather take my chances on Lake Ontario!

While having never read that book I've read several firsthand accounts of people's ascent and descent on Everest. It's pretty insane. They referenced using dead people as markers for where you are.
Not to hijack but read something about some climbers getting to the top and paragliding down the other day.
Also, doesn't k2 have a higher percentage of deaths over Everest? With something like 1 in 4 who attempt dying.

Each of the emotional responders who said No man left behind and insist someone must do something...would be dead on that mountain because of that choice.

I'm with Betty. I'd step over any one of you to get off that mountain. Don't want to freeze sitting down in a cave? Don't sit down in a fucking cave on mt everest.

x2. It's an awesome story. But I still maintain that those who do that shit are basically juvenile, insecure little people. I don't have to prove shit to anybody, least of all myself. You want to prove you "got what it takes"? Go work a couple jobs, support and raise a family, give people a reason to respect you. "I climbed a big mountain" would get you ridiculed right out of my house.

Those dumb fucks all deserved to die. They could have spent that same amount of money on a vacation to Hawaii.

More like 10 Hawaii vacations. At over $100k you'd definitely have cash left for tipping and hookers.

I know someone who was looking to climb to Everest base camp and that was going to be over 20k. I can easily see a bid for the summit being six figures.
