No big boys this weekend.

I'm walking a fine line between deer hunting and ecotourism here fellas.

Kill gland is swollen.

Hope a big one cruises the flat next week.

It's your own fault you haven't killed anything yet. Any of those bastards would be dead had they walked close enough to me.

I can't complain, I did have a lot of deer right in my wheelhouse. There was another 6 point this morning that I pulled back on in stead of taking pictures.

There's a reason I'm waiting.

I'm on the northern tip of Wisconsin. Real winters, little agriculture, and pressure from real predators means they don't get as big as other parts of the state. Hunting the big woods is fun but challenging.

A 140-150 class buck is a big one up there, anything better than that is huge. Pretty much the same as Texas.

All the B&C from WI come from the western and central part of the state. Lot of different things gong on geographically and in the soil.

No deer pics for me. I saw about 60 deer this weekend. About half were fawns so that's making the upcoming years look better. Probably a dozen bucks, mostly little. Saw one nice 8pt but couldn't get a shot on it.

Maybe I'm just not used to looking at fat deer. What would you guess he would score at?

What fawn? I didn't see no fucking spots. All of those deer are fair game as long as the buck had a spread of 13". Damn government.

Man that's a load of shit.

We get two bucks per hunter, one archery and one gun, and spikes under (or near enough to) 3" are considered does. No antler restrictions.

And we put up more B&C than any other state.

We get four deer. Two antlerless, a spike, and a buck 13" or greater. Scares me to death because no one in their right mind can honestly tell you that they can determine how wide a deer's antlers are at 30 yards. Hell you cant even do it without a shadow of a doubt at 15. Trophy hunters and their money fuck regs all up.

Well that's not exactly true.

I can get you plus or minus a half inch, at pretty much any distance.

Lots of areas in Alaska have a 50 inch minimum spread and that can be hard to do with complete confidence on a live bull.

Minus a half inch will result in a big problem. I have heard stories of asshole game wardens confiscating deer, guns, what have you. Worst one I've heard was a guy shot one that was 12 3/4 and a game warden pulled a tape on him. Bitched the guy out big time and took the deer and gun. He told the guy he was LUCKY that the deer was strung up in a tree and not in his truck or he would have confiscated the truck for transporting illegal game.

A couple inches off on a 50 inch moose and a couple inches off on a 17 inch whitetail are way different. Specially when the moose is 2 miles away.

And I've never seen a moose. :?

I am not doubting your ability to judge deer. I am just saying trying to determine if a bull is 50 or more inches is hard when they are between 45-55 inches and a lot of hunters wind up with problems when they pull the trigger.

If they are that close to the line, then don't shoot. If they wanted people shooting 12 3/4" deer, then they woulda made that the cutoff line. An average whitetail where I hunt has 16" from tip to tip in its ears in the relaxed position. Gives you a pretty good guide on determining size.

I bet all you guys bitch about size limits on fish too. I can definitely see where trying to judge a 45-55" moose would be difficult to judge because you don't have a good reference. But as Nuff said you can judge a whitetails width by his ears.....most of the time. Granted you may have times where you only have a side profile to look at but if you can age a deer on the hoof then there's a pretty good chance that if a deer is 2 1/2 or older he'll have more than a 13" spread. The rule is in place to protect the 1 1/2 old bucks. Practice not shooting the little ones ans you won't have a problem. And any decent officer wouldn't write a ticket for being off by 1/4".

It makes a difference where you hunt too. If it's an open field you have time to get a good look at them. Where I hunt my shooting lanes are only about 6' wide and I usually don't have time to get a good look at them.

Ear tip to ear tip is what they tell you. In the alert position it's ears should be 13" so we're told. And I haven't drawn on a buck in 3 years because of them being close Nuff. We don't get big deer down here. A 10-14" deer is about average for what I see.

Back to the ear thing. That's what the GWs tell us but things happen. What if a deer has small ears? Or he got frostbite and the tips fell off a 1/2"? If you down one that looks legal by the ears some GWs are understanding cause it's their rules. Others will just tell you tough shit. It's a stupid restriction.
