Nov. 22 1963??
Someone will start this so I will first.
I was two years old. My mom was doing chores and watching soaps when the news came out that Kennedy was shot. I remember her bawling and me trying to comfort her and figure out why she got so upset.
I remember that day well. How, I dunno but it's vivid.

I'm not even sure my parents met each other yet

I was discovering china

Blowing some money at a strip joint. A few days prior I sold this old Italian rifle my father brought home from the war. Guy must have been big collector or something. Wanted that rifle bad.

I was in Class at Foothill Junior College in Los Altos Hills, Ca. All classes were cancelled when it was addressed and we got the rest of the day off. I was happy because I didn't like Kennedy. I went out, got some beer to celebrate a day off from school.

1962: The number of US military advisors increased from 700 to 12,000
Although most written history states combat troops were not sent until 1965 "rolling Thunder" (200,000 troops) I believe 12,000 US military advisors sent in 1962 was the actual beginning of our inclusion in the Vietnam war. Prior to that, it was mostly supported by weapons and money.
Kennedy put us in Vietnam.

my point wasn't that Kennedy sent the first "advisors". I'm aware there were "advisors" since the 50s. Look at the numbers he increased in one single decision. I think you'd have to agree his advisors were fighting. Not that others before didn't also fight to some degree but, an increase to the extent he did was basically sending spec ops to help the south fight etc.
Is there any other reasonable explanation?

I was sitting in Government class, Sr. Year in HS talking about the 30th anniversary, 20 years ago.

Actually we had spooks over there busy building 15 or so of the largest heroin labs in the world back then. Our government in their infinite wisdom figured if the highland warlords throughout Southeast Asia had enough money, they could finance their own armies to fight the communists. Brilliant Huh?
Of course fifteen years later our DEA would try (with no luck) to shut them down.

Not a lot different than how we "helped" Afghanistan against the commies. Of course, that was more monetary, "officially".
