Went for an afternoon hunt with a couple of hunting buddies, warm enough for shirtsleeves only. Loaded the boat and headed across the bay.


After setting the decoys and parking the boat it wasn't long before we had our six allowed Red Heads and we were just settling down to congratulate ourselves when we saw Wiley Coyote crossing the marsh. Grab the guns, ammunition and get the airboat quick so we can add him to the strap. Shannon and Cody did a masterful job of one shot and drop on Wiley.


Finally, time for a can of cold barley soup. A few minutes after "Pop, pssst" we see a pair of black mallards (Mottled ducks) heading into a fresh water puddle near where the airboat is parked. Make the trek to the puddle and shoot the pair on the rise. Turned out to be a drake Mottled Duck and a hen Mallard paired up.


That was it for the day, no other ducks except Red Heads landing in our decoys. Had a few more cans of cold barley soup and picked up and headed for the ramp. Not a great hunt but for sure a good and fun hunt.

She is a good retriever but very timid. She is 8 years old and opening day this year was her first duck hunt. She has retrieved over 50 birds so far an seems to be getting better every day. She will do anything you ask her to do like wearing ear protectors in the airboat. She doesn't whine in the blind, doesn't break and handles pretty well and getting better. Wants to be by your side all the time. So far, I like her.
