4 Days

Postby Bootlipkiller » Sun Nov 24, 2013 8:16 pm

Of hunting mornings and a few afternoons takes its out of you but when you get favorable duck weather you got to be out there.

Wednesday I met my blind partners at the rice blind and we had a decent little weather system coming through. Off and on rain and a south east wind at 10-15. We had several opportunities but do to poor visibility out of the blind we never fired a shot. One group of about 6 sprig worked in on the west side of the blind at about 25 yards and for whatever reason randy who was sitting at that end hesitated and didn't take the shot. It was good to see the birds like the spread and didn't pick out the blind.

Thursday morning I woke to a 30 mph north wind and clear sky's. I took my friend who happens to be the land owner back to the rice field and at shoot time not much was moving. We had a few groups start working as the wind picked up and had a group of about 10 mallards cupped at about 50 yards when I went to move my feet in the blind I kicked a plastic bucket and John thought I was standing up to shoot. He emptied his gun and never touched a feather. We laughed it off and the next group we let come right in and managed two mallards. We had several other birds come in but saw them to late and never got a shot. John ended the day by shooting a loan bull sprig that floated right into the spread.

I noticed the birds were not coming over the blind like they should be but they were not flaring. Decoys needed to be moved but I was to lazy to adjust them before going home.

I went back out in the afternoon and birds were already hitting the fields so I again skipped moving deeks and jumped in the blind. I hade several large groups of 30 to 60 sprig work the blind but they again slid by just out of range. Now I'm regretting my laziness of not moving decoys earlier. Finally I look up and see a group of 3 acting interested. Talked them within 25 yards using my wingsetter and shoot a double.

My lab tule runs out and grabbed my bull sprig and I sent her out for the drake widgeon.

Those were the only birds I had an opportunity on for the afternoon and before leaving I did the required moving the decoys needed as thousands of ducks flew over heading to the fields to feed all night.

The next morning I invited my dad and we had a great time. Walking out in the dark you could see the silhouettes of ducks flying out of the decoys. We got in the blind and ducks were flying all over in the early morning light. The wind was still blowing like crazy and at LST a pair of mallards worked over the blind at 35 yards. I dumped the drake and swung on the hen but didn't hit her. Tule makes a nice retriever and a few minutes later another green head dropped in and after two shots he dropped. Then the teal started flying and coming into the blind off the east corner and two feet off the water. Not wanting to shoot over the dog we passed on one group and only managed two out of the next group that took the same line. Finally a group cupped up and rolled strait into the blind. And me and dad each killed one.

We missed a bull sprig a short time later that I have no excuse for and we ended the day by killing a bull trying to land directly in front of the blind.

It was fun and a good day for this time of year. Glad I got to share it with my old man.

Friday afternoon Joel (Tiler_J) tells me he's coming down to hunt his club so I decide to skip the afternoon and we make a plan to hunt his place in the AM and mine in the afternoon. I met him at his club around 9:30 Friday night and we have a few jack and cokes and go to bed entirely to late.

The next morning the wind is almost non existent but being slightly hung over we still managed two gadwall a buffe and a ring neck. We also picked up a bonus pheasant on our way back to the cabin.

Joel made a gut busting breakfast of bacon eggs and biscuits that cured any hang over symptoms we still had and we headed to the sewer treatment plant for the afternoon hunt. Only opportunity we had was a pair of gadwall that neither of us saw coming. They flew right in front of the blind and laded at 45 yards with a large group of decoys. We both had trouble seeing them where they landed and climbed up out of the blind to jump them and take a shot. As we got up we noticed the drake was on top of the hen. We were both laughing and had trouble shooting.

It was a good end to 4 days of hunting with family and friends.
