Tried To Flip It

Postby assateague » Sat Jul 28, 2012 6:47 pm

So, I've been meaning to see how far I could go before the hybrid would take on water. We were out clamming, using the boat to carry the cooler and stuff, and I finally had the chance. Pardon the shaky video, but the 13 year old was under the threat of harsh punishment if she dropped my phone in the water.

I found that only by standing on the transom could I sink it. Everywhere else, it will hold my weight, no matter how far I lean. If it wasn't for my astounding lack of balance, I could have walked all around it most likely, but it slips out from under you long before you could sink the thing. When I hopped up on the rear deck/transom, there is little doubt that I would have sunk it pretty darn quick. Way more stable than a canoe or kayak, by a factor of about a million. At the end, my feet were all the way on the nose of the boat. (we got about a 1/2 bushel of clams using only toes in about 3 hours in case you were wondering. Not the greatest numbers, but a pretty enjoyable day)

Too funny. If you fell out in deep water, could ya climb back in?

Yep. About 25 yards behind us there's a channel, about neck deep with good mud where we were clamming, and I climbed in the boat to make a phone call. I grabbed the side of the cockpit, and swung a leg up over the cowling like I was getting on a horse. Worked pretty easily. Could I do it in waders? Very doubtful. But the thing really can't be flipped from anywhere but the back, so worst case I hold on to the boat and float. There are three handles on it, one in front, two in the back, and the entire side of the cockpit makes a pretty good handle, so I don't think I'd have a hard time holding on.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's unsinkable, just that it's WAAAAY harder to get it to ship water than a jon boat. I'd love to make one about 12' long and 5' wide, with everything scaled the same as on this 7 footer. I think that would be the ticket.

I had one going but then had plans to add my pup to the picture. Ditched it and haven't started another one yet. I think mine would have run awesome with an outboard. Added more rake to it.

I've tested my Marsh Rat in a similar way, very stable for a little boat. I can climb my way into it from waist deep water with waders on fairly easily.

I'd like one about 22' long and 8'6" wide...

Wonder If that's doable, I got a 225 optimax that needs a home???

That'll cost a few bucks to build.

Stuck up, or has a stick in his rear. One might be more fitting given that story.

Really wish I could have watched you do that from a distance, not knowing your intentions.
