Cold as a witches tit this week! Below 0 and highs in single digits all week, on Friday low of negative 15 and high of 0. Will be expecting great things hunting the river below the dam on Saturday as long as I dont freeze first, should be covered in em! Any words on hunting extreme cold except for getting out later in the morning?

Seriously. I texted all my duck hunting friends in Reno to go hunting as soon as possible, saw it was getting snowy and colder there this week too.

We normally have lows in the 30's and low 40's. looks like we will have lows in the 20's all next week. I'm hoping for the best.

Don't throw your decoys. Set them in the water do they don't get covered in ice.
Keep your hands warm. If you start with cold hands you will have a hell of a time warming them back up.

Make sure your waders are dry, wool socks and avoid getting your hands wet like the plague. If your hands and feet get cold, you're not going to have fun.

I will be hunting in the afternoon mostly I suspect. Not because I'm worried about getting cold but if the rice water freezes they won't be able to feed on the high carb rice they need to survive until the ice melts. Ill be waiting if its as cold as they think it will be.

I've hunted in single digits temps, but never that far below zero I'm so stoked to hunt the river, the ducks are going to be suicidal!!

Good luck I've always wanted to do a hunt like that.

Clear and cold. Makes for a great day in a tule marsh. Birds move all day. Its by far my favorite weather to hunt in........ I did my fair share of river hunts in late October early November when I was up in Canada. Its something special to be on the only open water around. Grinds of mallards coming off the pea fields trading back and forth from food to water. Probably one of the best experiences I've had while duck hunting.

Why would you wait to go out later? Be set up at LST. Get the disposable toe adhesive heaters and the hand heaters. Put the toe heaters on the bottom of your socks when you wader up. Take an extra set of hand heaters if they get wet or whatever. As was said, if you keep your head, toes, and hands warm, you can stay out all day. Wear a balaklava and multiple layers and try not to sweat while setting up. Love cold weather duck hunting if your prepared right.

i always go out early but have noticed the birds start flying later, always heard others say they start later when it's cold too because the birds won't fly much. But maybe not?

Go set up at 2 in the afternoon, let it warm up a little. They'll be there.

what up bulldog? How'd your big game season end up? I'm thinkin I'll probably set up at Cali island... I don't know if 5 degrees counts as warming up though but I was kickin around the idea of afternoon hunting instead of morning

There are a lot of variables, how much open water, how much food is exposed, are you hunting where they are loafing or roosting, how much moonlight, etc. Sounds like Bulldog has it figured out. Have fun and good luck

Put the toe warmers on the top side of your socks. Outside your regular socks, inside your wool socks. Under your feet and it doesn't keep getting the air it needs to keep warming. If your toes get cold, just lift them up. Then you aren't walking on them all day too.

Exactly. I hate being late. Even if I'm hunting a private blind. I like to be early and let it calm down and ready for the first flight.

At the public area we hunt, we send one guy out of the truck to the blind around 2:00 am and hunt till we limit or all day and come back just before dark. These are migration birds so there is not really a pattern, you just have to be out there when the magic occurs.

I usually leave the launch at LST once ice starts forming. I don't like breaking ice on big water in a small boat. Mostly mallards late season and we only get 1 hen, so the early flight doesn't do much for me because it's too dark to ID yet anyway. Early and mid season I always try and be set up with around an hour left to go till LST to relax and get everything set to go.

The only stuff that's has good hunting around here that you can go set up that early is when we get high water from flooding. The river or bypass are your two choices. If we could get there that early at our wildlife areas I'd be sleeping on an island some where out in the marsh.

Never said I would be by myself...... couldn't get any sleep with everybody screaming HUNDRED YARDS!!! Every 5 seconds.

If its cold enough to make you cold wearing neoprene waders you shouldn't be outside.
