Have any of you ever killed a banded duck that had the underside of it's wings painted? I shot two Bluebills in one season (prob 20 yrs ago), and one of them had the underside of it's wings painted pink, and the other duck was painted with fluorescent orange. When I mailed the band information in, I asked what the purpose was for the paint. Was sent a letter stating they sometimes do that when banding the birds so that they can look at a group and tell how many had already been banded, and if a high percentage, would target another group. The first one was pink, and at first glance, thought something was wrong with the bird, but then saw the band. Two weeks later at a different location, spotted the orange paint on the other one and picked him out of the group, knowing he had a band. Been looking for painted wings ever since, but those were the only two I've seen.
We don't see too many bands down here, but have killed around a dozen over the years I've hunted the gulf coast. Mostly Mallards, but also Wood Ducks, Bluebills, Teal, and even shot a banded dove one year.

Funny thing for me was my first band was a gaddy, then a week later I shot another. Didn't kill another band for about 8 or 9 years after that.

I get a banded woody or 2 every season from the same bayou I shoot most of the grays in but never a banded one.
