My father is/was a legend in Ham radio circles so I know a lot about it.
I guess recently there were tornadoes in Alabama that destroyed all communications. ALL except Amateur Radio guys with generators.
Each year, world wide in late June the amateurs hold what's called" field day".
It's a contest where stations compete to complete as many contacts as possible.
When the earthquakes devastated Alaska in the 60's, my father was up for days helping send phone-patches from Fairbanks.
We were in Illinois.
Right now the same thing is happening in Alabama according to my radio.
Not sure, maybe it was an ad. Did Bama get hit by tornadoes and I missed it?

In Champaign the club has field day way out on a farm and they use generators from Civil Defense. Its like a nerd fest but I guess I'm a nerd.
