Gadwallian New Year

Started the New Year at daylight in a creek, hoping to pop a few wood ducks to start the year, but saw very few. One shot, crippled to the bank and we never found it....grrrr. Pulled the boat out, ran by the house for a quick breakfast and decoy reload, and headed to the delta. Spent an hour or so scouting before we found a huntable number of birds, but in a hard to get to spot. Cut a couple bundles of cane, and dragged the boat 200 yds over a sand/mud flat, and set up on the "X", exactly where the birds had gotten up. Partner wanted to get into a nearby blind, but I've played this game before, and knew that although we may kill some birds from the nearby blind, just isn't like being exactly where the birds want to be. Built a quick blind, spread out 3 dz gadwall decoys and settled in for the day around 11 a.m., knowing that the incoming tide would make it a lot easier to get out. The hunt started slow, but we still managed to kill 12 Gadwalls before the sun went down. Hunting public land around here has gotten tougher and tougher, and it felt damn good to kill a good mess-o-birds.

Gadwalls seem to be the duck of the season this year. Everyone, everywhere is killing them and seeing higher than average numbers of them.

We killed a dozen or so of them this year. Only had 3 total for all the years before.

It's been a tough year for sure Olly, and being new to the area doesn't make it any easier for you. Maybe we can hook up and hunt together before the season goes out. Nothing stays the same, always a few changes. As an old buddy of mine always says, "there are no more secrets, only dedication", and he is right, you gotta want it! Am heading to Gueydan, La to hunt ducks next week, but maybe can plan a hunt after I get back. Hunting in La will spoil you, and reminds me of what it used to be like around here during the 70's........and my ass is ready to get spoiled.

Let me know what works for you, I'd never turn down an opportunity to learn he ins and outs of a new area from a good local. I usually hunt every weekend out there.

Going every chance you can at this point trims down the learning curve. It's the old if you don't go, you don't know deal, and I'll be glad to help fill in some of the blanks where possible. Your hunting in MI was probably much better, and when you got down here and hunted a few times, I imagine you were thinking WTF? Our delta has a lot to offer, just takes a little time to unlock some of it's hidden features, both hunting and fishing.

Make sure you Bradshaw him, Delta. He's a shyster. Funny as shit Jim

You pretty much hit the nail on the head with that MI vs AL hunting comment. Up there it was stupid easy. Now I gotta work for it, but I love working for it.
