Anybody else hunt'em? Our area used to hold a lot more than it does now, but we are still able to kill a few, walking them up in the marsh. Now that duck season is over, it is our last chance to pop a few caps for the hunting season, and it ends at the end of this month. I always have a big hunt on the last weekend of the month on the East side, but we had a small primer last Saturday on the West side. Had a group of seven hunters, and killed close to 40 in a few hours, tromping the marsh. Makes for great exercise, and those speedy little bastards are fun to shoot at.
Pic of the day's tally

A hunting buddy had this boat made in La a few years ago, and it is badass

I'll be there on the 22nd! It'll probably just be me so I'll have room in my boat if anyone needs a ride.

Looking forward to it Olly, and I'm sure there will be another hunter we can pair you up with. I put the invite out there and never know for sure how many boats we will have from year to year. Could be 10, but could just as easily be 15-20.

that guy with big ears is exactly what i plan on looking and acting like too when i get older. We get a season up here but always seems a bit off for the peak of migration here and when you do see one and get one its with a mallard gun and the thing just goes poof. thats why i am wondering about your gauge cuz they all look nicely intact. must have been a wild hunt, again, nice post, never seen numbners like that.

Was thinking that myself. Sweet Chereaux makes a mean "little bird pot roast" with them. Might oughta make a pass or two through some stubbles if the weather straightens back out.

I'm always scared to shoot snipe and rails because I don't know the difference between them and the rest of the protected marsh birds.

Snipe make a very unique squeaking sound when they get jumped.

One of my early Louisiana memories is of a Lafayette newspaper report of two grown men busted with pellet guns and a sack of robins.

Beef, we shoot 20 ga and 12 ga, but shoot low brass #7 1/2 and #8's, dove shells. Thank God we are not required to use steel, but it is frustrating to be hunting ducks and find a thick wad of Snipe in the surrounding area. Little bastards are really a challenge if shooting steel #4's, and spensive! Being unable to carry lead when duck hunting sucks in those situations, because Snipe season parallels duck season around here. Thankfully, the Snipe season continues through Feb, as well as squirrel and rabbit, and gives us a few add'l weeks to hunt. Oh yeah, the guy with the big ears is 62, and still hunts as hard as I do. He shot 11 times Saturday and picked up 8 birds (the limit), and he shoots a 20 ga. o/u

I hunt them around here, either while I'm jump shooting ducks or, like now, after the duck season. Sometimes they're thick, sometimes just a few around, as they seem to move around a lot. I pass on a lot of them when I'm jump shooting ducks because I don't want to blow potential duck shooting, plus anything bigger than 4s seems like wasted ammo, and sometimes they're just buzzing all around as I float down the river. Season's open until the 16th. I might go tromp around for some, now. I hunt a WMA, so have to use steel. #7's work, but I wish I had something more open than a mod choke in my 20 gauge.

How do you get invited to the snipe hunt? Sounds pretty awesome.

You bring a bag out onto a field at night, and hold it up into the air. You make snipe noises, and they come to you looking for the other snipe. When they fly by, you snag them in the bag.

We can't shoot them in early goose. They don't open until after duck here because the season runs into February here.
I don't really shoot them except while duck hunting once in awhile. I know quite a few guys here that do.

Are you allowed to walk into the westside? If so, go check out seal #5 and #6. The snipe like that shallow piece of water for some reason.

I had to ask DeltaDan if he was pulling a joke on me

. I've never been on a real Snipe hunt before.

Light rainy days in baseball parks close to home, and the doves flock to the power lines. We used to grab a six pack and pellet gun, drive from park to park, and shoot them from the truck window. When we got to 12, it was back to the house for doves simmered in gravy

Would've been embarrassing as shit had we gotten caught

Our household's going to have to settle for big bird pot roast this year, as it seems our little ones have boogied. Tried both a stubble field and a pasture where I'd seen a slew of snipe goose hunting and both were barren.
Hope they headed to your marsh.

When we get moon high tides and the right winds, rail bird shooting can be a lot of fun. Here's a 2 man limit we shot last fall.

Every time I see those pics, I wonder if I've missed out by passing on the Virginias. Rails being another little bird potroast and skillet favorite here, I still shoot the occasional mess of kings (freshwater clappers) and even some tiny Soras, but had an off-tasting Virginia (which aren't too common here, anyway) many years ago that's made me hold fire on those.
Might oughta try another I guess - unless you tell me they need marinated in something strong to be tasty...
