My father in law was fighting for his life along with his brothers (USMC).
Harold was an aircraft mechanic fighting on the beach...it was THAT serious.

My grandpa had a farm hand for many years that was at Iwo Jima. Bob was a tough SOB, an ex marine who was always kind to us kids. He was like a part of the family. Anyway
he told me he saw the flag go up on Mount Sarabachi. He also told me he saw his best friend get his head shot off approaching the summit.

I only have one picture of Bob, here he is with me when I was a kid between him and my Grandpa. Bob is on the left.

Thank you Lance Corpral Robert Gentry. You fought for my freedom, you survived the war and taught me how to drive a farm truck. How to play baseball, and what hard work was really about. You were part of the greatest generation.

If the people in Washington had half the nut sack Bob Gentry had we would not be going down the tubes.

Old Harold fought in almost every major assault. Not sure why...
He was a mechanic.
I suspect that Saipan and Iwo was ALL IN.
Every marine that could hold a rifle was sent. ( I think)

For anyone who is interested, the movie Letter From Iwo Jima is an interesting movie. It shows the battle from the Japs point of view. They were doomed and they knew it.
