Little side job

I made the mistake of mentioning to a local HAM radio guy that I've climbed quite a few towers over the past few years and now he's passed my name onto two different HAM radio clubs in the area wanting me to climb their towers for various work. I was about to turn the first one down when he mentioned the pay. Last guy they paid was about $150 an hour just for climbing a 180' tower!

I'm going to the tower on Sunday to check it out and make sure it's safe to climb. I think I might have found a little side job.

That'd be the slowest tower I'd ever climb. Considering I'd actually climb a tower of course. There is your new trolling motor.

That's what I was thinking. I think the first job is going to be full two days since they need to pull up all new transmission lines for this repeater and a new antenna.

These clubs and this hobby in general is a bunch of old timers who sit around and rag chew all day so none of them are physically able to climb their own towers.

You need to count travel time and have a two hour minimum.

The first two hours need to go into fall protection gear. And an Otter Box.

Careful Olly! We had a guy get stuck on top of a 180' foot tower several years ago. Of course it was August and the 100 degree temp was the major factor since he started cramping up and couldn't get back down. His partner called 911 and the fire department was sent out along with the Sheriffs department. Luckily, a rappel instructor lived minutes away and was called because the fireman were literally lost when they got to the top of their ladders and they were nowhere near the top. The rappel instructor rigged up, loaded down with waters and headed up the tower to save this guy. Once he made it up and reached the guy and tried to rehydrate him, he had to stay up there with him for several hours while they came up with a plan to safely get the guy down.

I know you've probably climbed many towers yourself, but so had this guy. His job consisted of traveling the country and performing maintenance on these cell towers. You may know what you are doing and be comfortable doing it, but there may not be anyone around that knows what they are doing if something does happen.

The ropes and gin pole are still right where I left them in the shed. Ropes so long they each fill up a large Rubbermaid garbage can.

Just found out the neighbors are having a 200 foot cell phone tower put up. "Overjoyed" isn't even the right word. If I pay you $150 an hour, will you come take it down one night? I'll split the scrap with you 50/50.

You need to go underbid them right now they are probably going to make between 1000-2000 a month to have it on their property. Who says it can't be a few hundred feet in your direction.

Yup, money-fuckin-maker. Think the last one I worked on the prop owner told me they signed a 99 year lease. Take olly's advise.

Nah, they're at least having it put on the back of their property. But it will be the first thing I see when I walk out my back door in the morning, albeit about a half mile away. And I'm already thinking about the shenanigans that can be had with it. Like hanging a climbing treestand on that bitch about 75 feet up.

We don't have enough land. And even if we did, they've been in negotiations and surveys with them for almost 4 years now. Certainly not a fast-moving process.

I know a guy that signed into his contract with them that if he sales the land they have first dibs if they pay something like market +20% or something crazy like that.

For $2000 a month I'd let them plant one in the back of my 1/2 acre
