The best way is before you add the water. We dropped somewhere in the neighborhood of about 40 dozen ducks and a few dozen honkers. The thoughest part was not blocking in the pickup with decoys. Three adults and a couple kids, and we had it done in about 3 hours. Didnt slow down much to take many pictures, but here are a couple.

Y'all leave those out all season there, 'lab? Never set any that way, but have been misfortunate enough to hafta pick 'em up in a mire with no water when it suddenly disappeared. No fun...

The plan is usually to get them out of the water by Thanksgiving, before everything freezes up.

Opening the head gate here would bury the decoys in a pile of dust!!

Most of the state had good storms the last 3 days, some places over 4", they managed to fall apart or skude to the north or south of here, ended with less than 1", close to 15" behind on the year still.

We had the 8th wettest July in history here and I can still walk all the way accross my duck pond in tennis shoes and not even get my feet muddy. :( I feel your pain.

At least there is some moisture in the ground if it decides to rain any more. We had 1.36" in June, .9" in July and we are at 1.86" in August , most of which happened over last few days. Along with 50+ days over 100 deg, we are in bad shape, there is an amazing chunk of the country that is in very bad shape, hoping this storm in the gulf brings a lot of rain north with it.

man I hate hearing this. I'm assuming this'll hurt your duck hunting pretty bad. Any back up plans? Places within driving distance with enough water to hunt?

Have a few options, don't know if they will be any good though, my buddy just had a kid, so I could prob take his boat for the year, lakes will be an option. I normally hunt a cattle ranch which has 17 ponds, holds a lot of geese and occasional good duck hunts, unfortunately 14 of the ponds are empty and they are selling off cattle. Could go either way, will keep birds from stopping, or narrow down the ponds they can hang out on. To top it off, the upland hunting will also suck this year, thinking about adding a few days on to the Montana trip, and the deer hunting trip with my dad and Doc will be a good time.

That sucks! No drought here this year in NorCal we just have to worry about SoCal taking all our water so LL CoolJ's yard can stay green. Damn Los Angeles D bags.

Might be a good year to make some of those stakes for the floating decoys insead of buying a bunch of field decoys

Post a how to in the gear section, I'm interested. I've got 3dz hot buy floaters I want to replace and they would make good field decoys.
