I have just started waterfowl hunting this year.. I was a competitive archer for years and a bowhunter but my son and daughter wanted to do some hunting together and since I live near by a river we said how about trying some goose and duck hunting?? Well first day early goose season we connected on our first goose together..Had the best times of our lives.. I dident even have a call set some decoys and just after shooting hour we had some fly into our little island and we took one.. Here its is with my kids Image
We had so much fun and we are so hooked on it I got new barrell for my shotgun had a 24" turkey barrell and a turkey choke now have a 28" barrell and a mod steel approved choke. Got geese decoys and finally got a call and learned a little bit .. But does it look like we had fun ?? Image
Then youth Duck came in on saturday well friday night went to cabelas and got a duck call and the guy who worked there gave me a crash course on calling but hey it worked so got the decoys and we headed to the river early set some geese and 4 mallard decoys right a day break we had ducks into us but to early and then after shooting light and my son tried his best but couldent connect ..But we said we will give it 10 minutes then I see 2 ducks fly over head and I call and holy cow here they come.. They fly right above our decoys going to land I tell my son shoot them he pulls the trigger and I see the one fall.. He is so excited he runs and jumps into the river and grabs his duck.. "Yes we dont have a dog I also had to jump into the river with a goose in toe.. he slipped and was now at his neck Im like OK rescue your son and find the duck when it comes back up well my son regains his footing and he still has the duck in hand.. I was amazed I said I thought you let it go he said " Heck no Dad thats my first duck "" I was so proud of him and my daughter but she couldent be there on sat for duck. But we have so much more fun doing the waterfowl hunting as a family then bowhuinting.. So I am 100% nuts on this now..I only have the river to hunt and the geese have since left the area problly due to the pressure but I am so hooked on this sport we went to cabelas like I said I dident even go to any other section except waterfowl.. I know from what I heard on other forms that you dont ask for permission on these forums to tag along its offered.. So untill I due earn my way Im happt hunting the river and hope to find some spots near by but I am looking into local outfitters to book a goose/ duck hunt in the future.. We really would love to do a snow goose hunt together.. Well since I rambled on for a hour I will just say I am excited to be here and hope to learn a bunch from you all.. Hopefully someday we can share a blind together.. Oh heres my sons first duck.. Thanks everyone..Image

Ah, the fresh new hunter stage. Everthing is exciting, every bird is winning the lottery, and watching the birds work your spread is better than anything the ol lady threw out. Give it two years, and you'll know enough to know that you don't know jack, you've been skirting by on luck, and everything will start to frustrate you so you start buying new things to one up your game.

Welcome. Good for you on finding something your family enjoys doing outdoors!

Welcome to the obsession! It will only get better, and more expensive! Haha! Nice to see another hunter getting his kids out to enjoy a sport we all love.

By far and away the best example I've seen all year on how to introduce yourself when new to duck hunting/duck hunting web-site. Welcome and congrats!! Like everyone else said, it only gets better(aka-more expensive, frustrating, and more fun)

I shot semi pro in the IBO and ASA "3D Archery" and Shot Pro class in the NFAA "Vegas Indoor shooting style and FITA" I only shot a few field archery shoots but 3D was my love of the game.. I have worked for shops alot in my life and now have a little shop in my home that I work on bows for friends and family..

Thats cool. I started shooting 3d a few years ago and love it almost as much a duck hunting. What did you shoot bow wise? We also have an archery forum here. Not much in it yet but its still new

OBX, fins a shop that has a DART range around you. That is a pure blast, and the closest thing to real hunting I've found.

What is a DART range. Is it like a big game of darts?

Its like a movie screen that plays actuall hunting scenes and you can shoot your arrows at..The screen is a heavy vinal and it takes special tips for your arrows so you dont shoot threw the screen..

it's a blast, until your kid starts out scoring you, then you quit getting so excited about the 15 bucks your shelling out so the little shit can gloat all the way home

$5 a round here. But you pay $20 for a league, which is 6 shoots over 6 weeks. They go pretty much all year except hunting season at the local shop here. We have a pot luck dinner at the awards at the end. My wife is the only member of this household to have won a trophy, dammit. She's a pretty good shot.

OBX, you get a time limit, too. Each scene only plays for about 7 seconds, and you don't know when the animal's going to stop, or if he'll start moving again. When you hit the screen it lights up where your arrow it and automatically scores it for you. The shop I shoot at has about 25 different "movies" to watch, each with 30 "scenes". You can pick big game, small game, safari, mountains, woods, plains, turkeys, predators, you name it. If you're shooting in a group, the scenes are "rotated", so the first shooter doesn't get screwed each round, and the fourth shooter getting to watch three other guys shoot it first. Everybody shoots them in a different order, but everybody shoots the same 30 eventually. You need to find one- it's a blast.

It sounds kinda like 3d only in a movie.
