Postby Bowjoe » Mon Oct 08, 2012 1:58 pm

My rule of thumb has been this: if I'm hunting with the guide/owner, well, that's what I paid for. If I'm hunting with one of his employees, I'll tip them.
I have on occasions where the guide did an exceptional job or when he allowed us some flexibility, tipped the guide directly.

I feel the same as Dan. If it is the owner who is the guide that's his job. It's like if you need something fixed you don't tip the mechanic or the electrician or the plumber. You have paid for a service that you received. If you liked it and wanted to help him you can be a repeat customer and refer him to everyone who you know.

it wont be owner it will be one of his guides.. So whats the norm $50.00 , $100.00 $300.00 I have no idea I know when I was on a Elk hunt the guides are with ya do everything from calling to setting up tent and making dinner so its a 300 to 500 tip sometimes I know a guide works hard setting decoys just wanted a opinion on a fair tip..

My rule of thumb is the opposite of Dans. I have never been on a guided hunt but a good few guided fishing trips. If I go out with a guide and I am impressed with the operation and plan on going again, I tip the chit out of the owner. I will also tip the hires hand but hired hands come an go, the owner is the one I want to remember me. Example. I went on a salmon trip this year with a new guy out of Frankfort. I liked him, I had clients that I took out and they put us on fish, were very polite, well mannered, socially capable and had a pod sense of humor. I tipped the captain 150, the suggested was 60 or so. I did this because when I go next year they will remember me. They wont hesitate to run that extra few miles to where the bite has been or take the time to run all the lines. They know I'm a payer. I would want the same with a goose guide.

I am kind of on the same page as jehler, I dont mind tipping when I feel I was taken care of. On our Canada trip we were well taken care of, well fed, and pampered. It felt to me like he did everything he could do to put us in hot fields. That is worth something to me. I also plan on going back. Your guide is doing more work than you see the day of the hunt, think about all the scouting and door knocking for permission he does.

This is only an example from what we did, and remember one of the guys I went with was back with the same guide for his 18th consecutive year. On our last night there the clients dont let the guides wife cook dinner, we all went out for pizza. We bought pizza and the beers and all 6 guys passed a hundred dollar bill down the table to the guide. I dont know what he usually gets, but I was more than happy to give him a hundo.

Base it on your total experience, not just the bird tally. Remember some things are just out of his control.

What's the price of the hunt? I would think 10% would be minimum unless you want it to be an insult

There is no oversupply up here. The birds at least puddlers are below average so far.

Huge fan of the tip. I consider what I pay to be there just cost of doing business. The tip is the how you felt about the trip. And where the real money is for guides. Plus they've made it doing something they love and are happy.

I've only used a guide 3 times. Once on a sea duck hunt and I refused to tip that east coast prick for being a douche, completely unsafe and borderline ethical.

Now the other hunts were spring snows. The guides busted their asses for the older members of my group, did their best to keep us on birds, blah blah blah. I tipped them very well and collected tips from my group. We did 25 a day per person which adds up to a nice payday at the end of a 3 or 4 day hunt. Now if someone in our group isn't or wasn't happy I ask them to speak up and if they don't feel they should tip tell me why and I can live with it.
