Any wisdom for hunting sand hill crane ?

I'm planning on putting in for a permit Mt someplace.
The areas are a LONG ways from the homestead , sizably investment. Deer Lodge, Ovando, Dillon, Broadwater Co, Golden valley.

The question in my mind is would it be worth the $$$. 200 miles one way then flop around looking for some place to hunt. I have never hunted any of the crane areas.
It would be cool to shoot one but the cost and time...

I've shot them in NoDak. They are very wary birds and we shoot them only when they pass close enough to our spread. I have never attempted to set out a spread for them. However, I know a friend who hunted with a guy from texas over stuffers which he made himself and did very well. My suggestion is to go for ducks/geese and have a great time and possibly set a few sandhills off to the side of your spread and shoot them if the opportunity arises.

That is one thing I've heard. They are big birds so they are a lot further away than they look.

I drew a tag a few years ago here. I just setup on their flight path and shot them coming over. They fly low in the evening here. Tasted awesome! My wife drew the tag this year. Thinking of trying to setup for them this time

I've heard the same thing for hunting swans. Scout them out them out, get in their flight path. Then adjust when you see them coming. They are the biggest thing flying, they don't flare.
