I was told personally by a DNR biologist that rattle snakes or any venomous reptiles did not exist in the UP. Said that only lower MI below Traverse city had them and in very few numbers at that.

We do have some big ass water snakes. Still make me jump, but quickly don't worry about it.
My regular duck hunting partner seems scared of snakes. We were clearing brush and I found about a 4" snake. Picked it up since I thought it was funny to see such a tiny snake. He was a few feet away. As soon as I said hey look, he starts leaning backwards. I thought about tossing it too him, but figured he could beat my ass, so best not.

Wrong!
In Illinois, this endangered species is found in scattered colonies in marshy land. It once occurred in the northern four-fifths of the state, but intensive farming has decreased its habitat.
Colonies have been found in recent years in Clinton County in southern Illinois, Piatt County in east central Illinois, Knox County in western Illinois, and DuPage, Cook, and Will counties in northeast Illinois.
Eastern Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus)
NOTE: The eastern massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus), a small rattlesnake and the only venomous snake that has ever been recorded in DuPage County, hasn’t been seen in the county in 20 years and is believed to be extirpated.

Tough ain't going to save you from venom! REALLY my fear isn't so much me getting bite by a snake but by my dog running into one.
