A memory I will never forget..

Went out duck hunting the other day I set just 4 mallard decoys out near some current in the river makes them move around a little better.. I started calling and had a hen and drake come in missed both.. then a minute I see a group of 8 mallards fly over the island headed away from me I start doing a few loud quacks on the call and they do a big circle and actually start to land in my little spread.. I took one out of the group but to see them headed away and I called them back and watch as they come into my decoys doesnt compare to almost any other hunting memory then hunting with my kids of course..To see them turn and give me a look and come into the decoys was truelly a great experence I could of just watched and still would of been like OMG.. This waterfowl thing is one of the best decissions I ever made.. I wish I would of know about it when I was young but hey starting at 40 is ok too.. I just wanna do it all day long I dont even watch outdoor shows anymore except Duck Unlimited (cable is all I get) This waterfowl hunting is what a crack head feels about rock cuz when I cant go Im twitching like a freak.. Im just in love.. I tell the wife heck with cancun and disney I want Mississippi and Arkansas and Canada.. Sorry for the rant just wanted to describe how I felt that day..

I was the exact same way 3 seasons ago. That first pair that I made turn around might as well have been laced with crack, meth, nicotine, caffeine, and every other addictive substance known to man and then 3 others not yet known.

Never did commit but cicrcled our spread several times, I was so proud of myself that it didn't matter that they flew off.

Its funnt. Every year I hunt I think I turn less heads. Sometimes I think its all in the spread. So far this season it has been all or nothing. If they aren't maple leafing in they just seem to fly by without looking.

I also think i'm getting worse at shooting. I remember when I would take 50 yard shots all day. Now im lucky if I shoot beyond 25-30...and I think I whiff just as much.

Lately I've been picking my second bird before my first is shot I think. Leaving me with one on the third...

I've shot OK all season, so far. Except for this Saturday, went 20 shells for two ducks! I think it's the semi-auto, I've been lining up my first shot, rushing the second, then because I dont have the pump I can still get the third off semi in range. I was pissed. Usually, I average one duck every 2 or 3 shells

I've been there! On my last hunt of the first split it took me 10 shells to kill that drake black. Knocked it down on the first shot, thought it was dead because it just folded up and dropped. Took a few steps into the muck and it starts swimming/running. I shoot it 25 yards away 3 times and its like nothing is effecting it. Kept chasing and the shots got farther and farther. On my last shell of the 3rd reload it finally took a kill shot. Damn 2 shot sucks as a water swatter on a half submerged bird:(

One thing I've learned, and this may be just where I hunt, that less calling is usually more. When I first started calling I had a lot to learn and am sure I flaired a lot of birds because of it. Reading ducks is one of those things you have to figure out over time, some days they love the call others I hardly pick it up. Best piece of advice I can give is if they are doing what you want then don't call. If they aren't calling can only help.

I am a very very streaky shooter, I have days where I can't hit squat and others where I pound them. I do think that I've killed more birds on my second shot though than any other. Seems I am always thinking about the next bird and I rush that first shot, plus I hunt with a group of guys most days and you always find yourself in a hurry when there are a couple of you shooting at one or two birds.
