Apple cider time

Postby aunt betty » Mon Sep 04, 2017 5:17 pm

Friend of mine dropped off about two bushels of apples.
Have an old cider press. Love the stuff but it'd probably be best for y'all to keep upwind of me for while.

One of my wife's co-workers has an orchard. He caught wind of my making cider and is begging for me to bring the press.
Home-made fresh un-pasteurized cider is really good and you can taste the difference compared to the store-bought crap.

Cool. New place to keep some bees too.

Absolutely.

As a kid, it was always fun to go with my Aunt and Uncle that would gather a pickup truck load of apples and go to what was basically a supersized homemade press. You brought the apples and you jugged your own cider, but it was automated so you could do a truck load. So much better than anything you can buy which is unfiltered apple juice or whatever it is, but its not good cider.

Been putting a sprinkle of Saigon cinnamon in a cup of the cider after about a minute in the microwave.
Making two gallons last until Halloween is going to be a challenge.
Might have to buy some apples tomorrow from the dude who parks down the road with produce. His peaches were most excellent.

This weekend decided to boil up some of the cider. To one gallon of "juice" added allspice, cinnamon, and some cloves along with an orange cut up in slices. Simmered it about 30 minutes. It's a winner.
Yuh can't buy that kind of good.
