Postby R. Chapman » Tue Nov 05, 2019 5:50 pm

It's with great sadness to come on here and announce that AK Pirate (Tim Griffith) has passed on to the duck hunting pond in heaven. I just found out on FaceBook through some mutual friends who I have met on here. RIP soldier.

Timothy Edward Griffith, LTC US Army (ret), beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away from natural causes October 2019 at his home in Alaska. He was born and baptized in Huntsville, AL, lived in Silver Spring, Maryland, and then moved with his family in 1972 to Kent, Washington. Tim attended Star Lake Elementary, Totem Junior High and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1982. He was confirmed at Resurrection Lutheran Church in 1978. In 1986 he graduated with a BS in Forestry Management and was a Distinguished Military Graduate of the Washington State University ROTC program in Pullman, Washington.
Following graduation, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army and stationed at Fort Belvoir, VA. During his career he had assignments on the United States Military Training Mission joint staff in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as Plans Officer with the Huntsville Center, Army Corps of Engineers, as Training Detachment Advisor with the South Dakota National Guard, and as a platoon leader/staff officer with the 2nd Armored Division in Germany.
He commanded the 47th Engineer Company headquartered in Fairbanks Alaska from 1991-1993. During his command tour, the company deployed to the Philippines in support of the relief effort after the Mount Pinatubo eruption. He then served as the S3 Operations Officer and Assistant Division Engineer for the 41st Engineer Battalion, Fort Drum, New York. After serving as the Deputy for the Southern Area Office, Alaska District, United States Army Corps of Engineers, he became the Deputy Commander of the U.S. Army Engineer District, Alaska on May 16, 2003, and retired after 20 years of service in 2006.

During his career he obtained his MBA from the University of South Dakota and was a graduate of the Command and General Staff College and the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses. He was Ranger, Airborne, and Air Assault qualified. His military dec
orations included the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Army Commendation Medal (two awards), and the Joint Meritorious Unit Award.
Tim’s hobbies were hunting, fishing, Mustang automobiles, eating chocolate chip cookie dough and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by his loving parents, Skip and Eleanor Griffith, his sisters Valerie Haack and Laurie (Brian) Pickering, nieces Ella and Corinne Pickering, nephew Nathan Haack, nephew Matt (Amy) Haack and daughters Taylor and Madison, and nephew Kevan (Michelle) Haack and their daughter Grace, as well as aunts, uncles and cousins.
We take comfort in knowing Tim is in his heavenly home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Resurrection Lutheran Church, Des Moines, WA https://www.resurrection-lcms.org/ or https://www.salmonforsoldiers.com/.
