I've never been banned. I've only go reprimanded once, I'll tell that because it is hilarious.
When ever someone gets under my skin or I just can't stand their posts, I ignore them. It makes it more enjoyable for me and I have no doubt it is why I've never been banned. As soon as I start posting things I realize I probably should not. Ignore, don't post. After a cooling off period, I stop ignoring them.
As far as the one time I got reprimanded. Someone asked about something. I provided a link to help them out. I had other posts too. Then I get this private message from the site owner chewing me out about policy and ... He didn't cite the post or what rule I violated, ... I figured it had something to do with the post that disappeared. What I found out later, I had posted tons of links, that the guy that ran the site I linked to and the guy whose site I posted the link on had a personal feud. How the hell was I supposed to know that? I didn't see "we hate those guys, so don't you dare link to anything on their website" in the community standards page.
But then again, just ignoring is sometimes not good enough for some people. They need to take it upon themselves to police their standards.

Heavy handed mods.
We weren't supposed to talk about this site on dhc.
Internet feud stuff you know.
PorkChop wrote:Unfortunately the ignore list or as it’s called here the Foe list you still see that the person posted you just can’t read it unless you want too. When I have somebody on ignore I would just rather not know altogether that they posted anything.

I don't think it's a matter of "following", more like showing up only to find the stench is already there
