My first stupid question

Postby rozzo842 » Tue Nov 06, 2012 10:42 am

This is my first season duck hunting. I have no dog so am stuck getting birds with my kayak or wading I'm the shallower areas.
Question is should I try to camouflage the kayak and hunt out of it or hunt from the shore and just use it to retrieve?

I know, get a dog, but it just wont work for my situation right now.

I would just use it to retrieve birds and hunt from shore. It might be tough to shoot sitting in it.

X2. I've hunted without a dog for years. I use a 10 ft silver Jon boat.

I would just hunt from the bank and just put a pile of brush on top of the kayak and use it to retrieve the birds I couldn't wade out to

Are you sure this is your first? Seems like you're pretty good at it.
just kiddin'.
Slide the yak on the bank and cover with grass and brush from the area you are hunting. Then, lay in it and pop up and hammer the unsuspecting victims as they show for the party.

I do both. It just depends on where you are. Can't get out of the watercraft when hunting wild rice lakes, so sitting in them it is. Cat tails? Out of it and stash it till I need to get a bird.

Alot of the places we hunt, you pretty much need a boat to get to. So we boat out, pull up to wherever, set out everything, make a blind then go stash the boat down shore several hundred yards and cover it with camo burlap. You can surely do the same, but I imagine its alot easier hiding a kayak than a 16 foot John boat.
