Wife n daughter painted this lil feller. Had him fired and just got done a couple days ago.

Finally picked some tomatoes and brought them inside to ripen.



And some oregano (Italian and Mexican) and rosemary.



Got about 4 gallons of green beans picked, and about another 4-6 to go, then digging potatoes and pulling onions. Tomorrow is canning, roto tilling, and planting squash and some cabbage. I'm beat.

I refuse to pick any more peppers. If anyone wants them, come get them.

How many pepper plants you have? How many picked?

I have 36 plants, and have already picked at least 10 gallons. I've canned 15 quarts of sliced pickled jalapeños, and the rest just got thrown in the freezer. Bumper crop this year.

I'm gonna try it. I've got these bastards just sitting here taking up space.

I planted 12 green pepper lants and three jalepenos that I started late as an afterthought. Been giving away peppers and cherry tomtoes but I will save every single tomato for sauce. My roma plants all fell over from the weight. Need better cages.

The cages I made from cncrete mesh wire will not fall over. I figured they would limit yield and they do. Something about propping up maters isnt good. I get more when I let the plant fall over. Still experimenting.

Noticed when tomatoes fall over, they root where the stem touches dirt.

Our crazy wet, cool weather, and high humidity have taken their toll on my tomatoes. I think I'll get the first round ok, but that's it. They're all dying from a leaf spot fungus, and dying quick.

Why do you bring them in so green? Why not leave them on the vine?

The weather is so hot and humidity so high that I'm having problems with fungus and mold this year. In the past I've found pulling them as soon as they start to blush (as long as I can keep up) works better, keeps them blemish and rot free, and doesn't change the taste at all.

I do that too. Squirells like tovtake one bite out of a ripe tomato. If I let them vine ripen...I lose too many to tree rats.
I have lots of black spots too. Will see if I get more maters.I sprayed for fungus. I spray the roses and while at it, do the whole yard and garden. It works.

So do mocking birds, blue jays and robins.

Assa and other successful growers, what is your fertilizing regime like? I really didn't get anything from my garden this spring and not sure what to do. I had probably one meal of green beans and everything else came off so slow it wasn't worth picking. Got three quarts of pickles a few zucchini and squash and next to no okra. The only thing that put out was tomatoes and peppers. I've been too lazy, and somewhat busy, to research what makes those two successful vs the rest so I'm resorting to internet scouting. Have a small compost that is starting to work itself into compost but I'm still waiting for the FIL to get his old mustang from the side of the house where I want to make a permanent big bin.

It may be lime, as well. I cover the garden with horse manure/shavings from the stalls, till it in around Christmas, then lime the hell out of it. Then it just sits until I'm ready to till and plant. You can get technical and have a soil sample done (should be about $5 at your local extension office), but I never have. With horse manure, you really can't have too much, and the lime is what makes the plants able to absorb fertilizer. I think I put 400 pounds of lime on the garden this winter.

But compost is a very, very good thing.

I started to spray some lime on this summer but my wife was hesitant that we would do more harm(agronomy degree, all book no practice mind you) still have the bottle sitting here but might plant a few things just to try for a fall garden

I've never used liquid, always pelletized.

Liquid lime is for taco a and gin&tonic

I move my compost piles around. I always plan on gardening in the spot where they sat.
Have three piles that I am turning constantly. When we put in skins from veggies etc. I cover it with some dirt from another pile. Kind of rotating which pile we add to.
Keeps flies down.

I'd like to have a more "official" compost pile, but we just have to much horse manure for that sort of thing. So I have a large manure pile that gets food scraps thrown on top. Sonofabitch gets so hot sometimes it'll almost burn you.

My composters literally eat stuff. The watermelon rinds from the 4th were gone in a week.
And then you get these. My tomato patch...75 sq ft.

I was warned not to use horse shit. The guy said that sprouts from their feed will overtake your garden. We know better but I chose to just not ask him for any more manure. I think he just wanted to avoid me getting giggitty with his horse...or something.

Today's tomato pickings. From half my plants. I just had to call the neighbor to come pick the rest for himself, since in gonna be out of the loop picking up the pup. Dammit.

My romas got so heavy the all fell over. Took cages down too. Bent them I mean. So cool lately...ripening slow. 70 degree highs in July is unheard of but No ac is nice.
