We're hunter-gatherers. Suggest we have a forum for the mushroom hunters and gardeners. (mater growers)

I would love to get into mushroom hunting. I found a spot a few years back where you litterally cant walk without stepping on what I am convinced are chanterelles. Even cooked and ate some. Then I got scared and never went back.

Are they really as good as people say they are? Or do they just taste like a mushroom?

They don't taste anything like a regular market mushroom. They have kind of a sweet taste to them IMO. But I would never pay the price per pound that they sell for in the stores.

on the first season of dirty jobs, he went to a mushroom farm. they were growing them in human waste and he pulled a used rubber out of the dirt.

i didn't really like them before that and have not eaten anything with them in it since. for a while after that i got really picky about what i ate. it really wierded me out about where food comes from

Good to know this. I don't think I'll buy another mushroom, or anything grown organically.

Same here. They look too alike. And some of those bastards won't kill you for three weeks. Won't even be sick until you fall over dead. Nobody'd have a clue.

My legacy would be so tarnished if I allowed mushroom to kill me 3 weeks later.

Absolutely hate mushrooms. Can't stand the taste of them. Why would I knowingly put a fungus in my body?

Yeah, if I remember right there were one or two Roman emperors and a few other old-timey Europeans who met their end this way. The assassin was two countries away by the time they kicked in.

I pick em up when I find em. Usually turkey hunting. Sometimes I find them big Hen o the woods in the fall. I don't think they are anything special. Just food. The batter is what makes them good. A good hushpuppy is just as good, Just food. Nothing special, like duck, geese, other wild stuff, steak, just food, nothing special. I've killed many a turkey while I walked around clucking and looking for mushrooms.

We call them chicken of the woods. There's not a lot around here, but there are a few. I chop them up, fry them up in a little sesame oil and soy sauce, and eat them with venison. Generally, if it grows on a tree, I'll pick it and eat it. I don't think there's any deadly ones that grow that way. Some may make you sick, but I don't think you'll die. I'm still here, anyway.
