I'm going to build a teepee

Always wanted to do it.
All I need is the poles and a 30'x20' tarp or bigger. These plans look pretty simple.
http://www.shelterpub.com/_shelter/www_teepee.html

I have the poles picked out already. A stand of trees on my parents farm that are all straight, 20-25' tall, and about 2"diameter.

Found a tarp at the farm-store that's heavy-duty and perfect for what I need. It's silver on one side and dark on the other.
http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/181246-agrimaster-heavy-duty-tarp.html#.UVRCVRe-nuc

I'm going to try and make this teepee reversible and use the silver out in summer and dark out in winter.
I think I can build this thing for less than $100. The tarp is $59.99.
It's bigger than my tent and I can build a fire inside. COOL!
Have to cut the trees and let them dry this spring.
Will post some pictures as I build it.

Aren't tarps flammable?

If you are as die hard as you say you are, why don't you invest in a small wall tent that you can use a small wood burner in and live half ass comfortably.

These things are about 13 feet tall at the center and have 15' diameter at the base.

Been spending a lot of time working out how to build a Teepee with common building materials that are cheap and easy to get...Plus make it so I could haul the thing around.

I came up with making rings of plywood with notches where the 1" PVC poles go and then fasten the poles to the rings with piece of bungee cords with knots in the ends. Cut a slot where each cord goes opposite each notch.

Decided to make three "stabilizer" rings. This means I could use less rigid materials for the poles. (ie:pvc pipe)

Will make a ring that has a 1-foot outer diameter for the top.Cut a 5" hole in the center.
The second ring will have an outer diameter of 8' with an inner diameter of 7'.
The third ring will have am outer diameter of 11' with an inner diameter of 10'.

The second ring will make a nice shelf that's about 8' off the ground. Nice for hanging hunting clothes and waders...

The third lower ring will be approximately 4' off the ground. I'll hang painter's runner tarps that are 4' wide to make the heated part of the tent smaller. The bonus is I can stash stuff behind the "curtain" out of sight and keep my pots and pans, food-stuffs etc. on the shelf that's 4' off the ground.

I worked out a tongue and groove system to connect the pieces of my rings together with screws on-site. That makes hauling the whole structure possible.

I'm close to building the thing.
Need to get:
30'x20' heavy duty tarp: $60
1"x20' long pvc pipes qty:10 $35
1" couplings $5
Plywood $40

Some small diameter bungee cord...
Whole project is coming in for less than $150.
Will be fun to build.

Hey Acorn, I saw something at my local sporting goods store that might be what you are looking for, they called it a "Tent". They had many different sizes and styles to choose from, you might want to check it out.

If it actually works out good I might have to try it. How big are the dimensions on it going to be Acorn?

Red didn't wake up under a tee-pee. That would be gay as hell.
AB, I built and lived in a tee-pee when i was a pre-teen on the weekends. We lived in and made many styles of homes like this. Tarp worked fine. Just do a large circumstance and shallower ceiling with a big hole. The one weekend I missed camping in it my friends burned defoliated poison ivy vines in it and they all almost died. None of them were in school for two weeks. I was actually jealous. The last fort we built was a very log cabin like structure and was discovered by the land owning farmer. He called the cops cuz he thought a homeless man was crouching (or whatever that is called) on his land. Tarp is so crucial when it is raining. Nothing worse then crawling your ass back into the house defeated. Geez, we ate so many dam creek chubs, bull frogs, crayfish and whatever the farmer was growing in those huts.

Woa...One of the things I myself tested in college was what you're talking about. Brittle plastic.
The term we used was "temperature transition.

This is what we found. When you make certain plastics cold they tend to shatter like glass.
The worst was polycarbonate and guess what's made of that? Safety Glasses. In other words safety glasses are really HAZARD glasses when it gets at or below freezing.

PVC isn't as bad or you'd NEVER be able to cut it on a cold day. (vinyl siding is PVC)
I'm aware of the properties of plastic and if I was campin in Michigan...wouldn't even consider using it.
Arkansas is much warmer and it rarely gets in the twenties. It'll be fine and thanks for your concern.

Bamboo would be ideal. Someone price up what it'll cost me for 15 bamboo poles that are 16' long and about 2" diameter at the bottom and 3/4" at the top.
Carbon fiber rods would also be ideal. Cost analysis? ain't even going there.

The whole concept here is to use some kind of readily available material that's cheap for the poles.
Something I can buy in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Hauling all the poles 350+ miles is what I'm trying to avoid.
