Ok guys, trailer bearings

Just bookmarking for now. I will post up details later. Initial details: I stopped at grocery store coming back from crappie trip and a stranger ran up to me and said my trailer wheels were making sounds like the bearings were going. Good Samaritan huh? Now I'm scared to send the boat anywhere. I hope I can do this this weekend. Seen it happen once. Im so scared I try to DUI this instead of DYI this. Bookmarked.

Thanks for the link and words of encouragement. The last time I saw this I remember just doing the bearings and it was a royal pain in the nuts for some reason. Is it better to just do the whole thing like your link shows? I also remember bringing the old bearings into the shop and we were glad we did because the next size was 1/16 in difference and the store owner measured the old bearings with a caliper to be sure.

If you can change a light bulb, you can swap out a bearing. No need to worry

You could go that route and get new bearngs pressed into your hub if you wanted to, or buy the whole thing new like the one Jehler linked. The first option might be cheaper, the second is faster

Took off both hubs today and one side was in treacherous shape. Next time i will replace the whole axil for sure and probably the ;leaf springs as well. That rod that all the hub gear mounts on had a small grove in it. I cant believe that one side held on for my whole last trip. The bearings were falling out. Good GOD!!

I got the hubs at Tractor supply and paid a hair extra, but want to be able to return if need be. I dont trust myself to understand a hub 3 dimensional enough to order online too.

Make sure you keep the outside bearing and cotter pin screw(that weird srew). They dont come with the hub kit. Not a big deal because they dont get worn.

mine came with everything, new crown nut, pin, dust cover both bearings

There's only one dust cap right? I wasn't suppose to cover the back with anything right? Effin a cotton. And that dust cap went on like a babby backed bitch. Had to get a 2x4 and beat the backside of it like silver backed gorilla

I have to admit, that made me smile I re-read it and couldnt help but to smile again...

Sunday AM is not always Jarbos best time for volunteer mechanic work. But even at half speed, he is twice the mechanic I am. His whole family are very mechanical, from grandpa to brother, dad, and Mr Kentucky Deluxe, Jarbo.

You don't need to replace the whole hub.
I rebuild hubs all the time and it doesn't take special tools other than a brass punch. I use a brass rod to pound out the old races and then use a piece of hardwood to hammer the new ones in. Sometimes I skip changing the races if they still look smooth and new.

I always take the inner and outer bearings with me when I go to the parts store...otherwise they have no clue what I need.

The thing you gotta worry about is trashing a spindle. Been there, done that and it's not a happy thing.
Always keep a spare set of bearings in the boat (for the trailer) and the tools to change them. Has saved my hunting trips multiple times.

NEVER re use the old
Races, bearings and races are matched, new bearings could be at a slightly different angle. Better to install races with a press and appropriate sized piece of cylindric steel. I install new hubs because I keep a spare with me, much easier to use a kit on the side of the road

take a look at my question above about number of dust caps. taking into consideration my hub package didn't come with the parts you do do you think there a chance it didnt come with it? It looked pretty solid back there. IDK. FART TOOTS
