Trying to help parents out by mowing their 2 acres at the abandoned house.
The belt for the blades is fuckin up. Where do I start and how?
Its a small john deere lawn tractor. I think it cuts a 4' path.
Do i turn it on its side or what?

Pull the cotter pins to drop the deck. Most likely one in front, and two on each side. The side brackets swing independently of each other.

Buy a belt that's 2 inches too small. I hear it unleashes the full horse power.

You should see me when I start my tiller, now. It no longer has "neutral". Along with my belt sander. The switch in it went bad, so I pulled it out and bypassed it. I tell everyone who borrows it, but apparently they still think its NOT going to take off the second they plug it in.

Try pissing on the old belt first. The urea will recondition the rubber.

Excellent point. And make sure to shake the deck to make sure the bearings are equally seated before you put it back on.

While you're at it, a good coat of piss on the bearings too. Dont forget to save the last few dribbles for the gas tank.

I figgered it out. The idler pulley was effed up.
Easy fix but the parts guys at John Deere are VERY unhelpful.
They failed to tell me that the company had redesigned the whole assembly to where instead of 3 parts it now takes 5. I had the assembly sitting on their parts desk and they didn't even want to look at it. They assured me I had everything I needed and didn't need to worry about driving 18 miles back to get anything they forgot.
Guess what they didn't sell me?
I'll just tell. The idler pully bearings used to slip right over the bolt. NOW they redesigned the pully bearings to where you need a sleeve (bushing) and a washer. Of course they want $8 for the bushing and $4 for the washer. I went to the hardware store and got what I needed.
I bet they think they taught me to NOT work on a tractor. Also wondering why I never came back for the parts they forgot to try and sell me.

That place was weird. The employees were all hustling around trying to appear busy. A guy who looked like a million dollars (owner) was the only nice person and he just asked if everything went well. At the time, I thought it was going well. Wish I had time to track him down and tell him how it REALLY went.
