UDS question

Postby 3geese4me » Fri Jun 21, 2013 10:16 pm

When I get time to build my UDS, would it be ok to use a PVC ball valve for the intake? or is getting a brass ball valve a necessity?

Personally, I think it'd be fine, mine doesn't get hot at all. You can almost put your hand on the bottom edge of the drum while smoking. Get the yellow kind, for hot water just to be safe.

That was my thoughts as well. But I wanted to consult with the BBQ experts at WFF to double check.

I've got to build one and have it ready by next Friday to smoke 14 lbs of Pork shoulder for a party Saturday. Got the drum and found a guy who makes a real nice welded basket with an ash catcher for 60 bucks on Craigslist just need my plumbing, thermometer, and racks ...and time to put it all together.

I use electrical plate covers for my intake valve.

All better now!

Could you post a picture of how you have it rigged up?

I think the plastic valve would be fine.

I dont get why you need a valve. Air intake control isnt rocket science. A flap on a hinge like this would work. Be creative.
Thermometer isnt required. I can gauge how hot my smoker is with my hand. Exact temperature control is difficult.
