Toughest Hardwood Finish???

Postby goodkarmarising » Mon Jul 15, 2013 3:25 pm

Ok, I am wondering what kind of hardwood finish some of ya'll would recommend. Already did this once and less than 2 years again our hardwood floors look like crap. Any suggestions to a hardwood finish that will hold up to 2 labs, etc? Put minwax oil based polyurethane down on the floors and that stuff just isn't holding up. I will be willngly to cough up some money if the finish will actually last.

I think you are going to have to live with scratched floors.

I've never heard of anything which will solve your problem, GK. That's one of the attractions of laminate floors. I don't think any self-cure process will ever get hard enough to stand up to dogs/denting/scratching.

I would think that this stuff would last longer than 2 years and the problem I am having with it is that in spots that the dogs don't even tread on are chipping and breaking off.

Go with more coats, thinned for the first two. I know this is a pain in the ass, and why people don't do it on floors (because it takes forever, and you need to walk in your house). If possible, put down one thinned coat, and then two thin coats rather than trying to do it all in one.

That's what I'm thinking. Some kind of clear epoxy finish.

Will cost an arm and a leg, but it wont scratch without trying. We use West system epoxy for a base coat on the boats we finish, then varnish over the top.

Well since minwax was $45ish a gallon, if I had to pay $80 to $120 a gallon for something that actually worked, I would be money ahead down the road.

Jehler, do you not do your own floiring? I know I've seen your pictures.

The best I've seen is a two part catalyst floor finish that most hardcore flooring guys special order. You will never find a finish that won't scratch from dogs or dirt. I actually prefer Zinnser Bullseye floor poly with the amber tint in it. Its like $80 for 2.5 gallons and makes you nauceous using it, but has held up great with two dogs that go in and out freely all day.

This is my kitchen. Utilty grade hickory with the amber tint poly.

I don't know what the epoxy costs per gallon. We buy it by the 55gal drums and I think that runs somewhere around 6 or 7 grand with the hardener. So I guess that's around $110/gal for bulk. I do know the stuff stands up to UV like shit, it gets cloudy and hazy. We put some kind of varnish on top to give it a real shine and to protect the epoxy, but scratches in the varnish don't show much with the epoxy base. Im not the finish guy, so I'm not sure of the exact process. It's a lot of work and money though. When your talking half million dollar boats it's one thing, but might be overkill for a house floor.

Thin out some Gorilla Glue with acetone at about 2:1, then put on with a stiff bristle brush in a circular motion. When it's cured, it should be impervious to the dogs nails, but not dents from something getting dropped on it.

They look great but why only 2 coats? You have 2 dogs. I went with 4 but Id go at minimum 3.

Went with Poloplaz and a sealer....was told that was the way to go by a hardwood installer. Have yet to be back over to really check things out again.

Well left a few ridges in the 2nd coat in a visible area, so a 3rd coat is going down.
