There was a pretty big part of my mind that was expecting the same thing.

Headed out to rewire the welder, see what happens running just 110. No clue, but I'm gonna find out.

I hope it works out cause I'd rather fuck around with 110 than 220 anyway.

I've touched a smallish Tesla Coil with about 8,000 volts running through it before. Volts don't scare me, amps do.

Cool. I've always wanted to see a Tesla coil. Still would scare the shit out of me. Whether it is deadly or not.

This isn't entirely true. High voltage lines will kill you, because they can overcome the body's natural resistance.

It's not the volts in the high voltage line that kills you... it's the current. Only takes something like 100mA to stop your heart where I have literally had over 8k volts running through me. The Telsla coil was obviously high volts low current.

Once a young electronics technician said to my dad, "12 volts aint shit".
So dad got out a power supply, wired the kid up, grounded him good, then said, "tell me when to stop".
At around TWO VOLTS the guy was crying and begging dad to stop.

Its the volts and the amps....that kill u.
Grounding matters too.

He's since revised his estimate upward a little bit. Can't wait to try it tomorrow with some modifications, see what happens.

i saw, 600A is ridiculous. if it was me i would wear a lead cup, just in case that thing is radioactive.

also, i wonder how feasible it would be to use 3 bar coated in flux as an electrode. I'd imagine 600A would probably cook it off pretty well.

We got it down to 180A. Instead of using resistors, we wound some 10ga wire around a block of metal, made a small electromagnet which introduces impedance into the line. Played with the number of coils while shorting out the ground and electrode holder. 180A seems to be about right.

This was the 3rd weld with the Frankenwelder and seemed to work pretty good even on thinner stock. I'm happy as a clam.

Did you not burn through that metal?

It did in a few spots by the looks of it. Not bad though.

What rod are you using? I don't ever use AC to weld but that weld looks like an AC weld to me.

A stick welder should have vaporized that thin shit. At least it would have if I was welding.

Using a 5/64" 6013 stick. The burn throughs were as we were unending coils, seeing what amperage worked best.

As far as AC, I have no clue. It's plugged into a 220V receptacle with 2 hots and a ground, and a 50A breaker. It's got 37V coming out, and around 180A, now. Only the amps change with the added impedance (number of coils around the metal block), not the volts.

Its AC. I hate welding with AC or else Id give it a shot in making one just for the fun of it.

And I guess i shouldn't say I hate AC completely...i use it for aluminum. Straight DC is the only way to go for typical welding and reverse for thin(which i never do)
