Not sure if any of you do it. I do and wish I had access to AT's horses. I get plenty of tomatoes and peppers by using compost when I plant and mulching.

Assa, you put horse shit around all your plants? I've been meaning to ask if you put it around beans or not since you don't fertilize them like other plants.

Take my compost and mix it in as I'm planting green peppers and tomatoes. A shovel or two mix in with the dirt around each plant.
Beans don't need fertilizing here and neither does the corn, tomatoes, or peppers. I just feel like I get bigger and better veggies by using the compost plus I don't have to play the yard waste racket game.

I have a free supply of farm grade compost. DH is correct it's tough to beat chicken shit for raw material. However it requires a lengthy treatment process otherwise it will burn plants.

My wife wanted a compost pit and she wanted a square foot garden, I built both for her. Our garden has never been successful and we have never used any of the compost for anything but growing volunteer tomatoes and cantaloupe.

That's your problem. Your garden needs to be a minimum of 50 square feet to be successful.

I don't. Just cover the garden and till it in. I try to keep it thin where I'm planting beans, but I usually change my mind as to where I'm planting them. But we pile it up all around the flower beds all year long and just key it break down. Even fresh, it won't burn.

The tricks to being good at gardening...
You gotta love digging and raking and hoeing etc.
It sounds like tons of work but if you mulch and use a bagging mower...you hardly ever weed. Compost is just part of recycling yard waste into black dirt (what you want) . It gets easier each summer as you work that good black garden gold in. It does more than fertilize. It builds garden soil that's soft and crumbles up easily.
After a couple years you'll be amazed at how easy it gets and how good everything grows.

There's more to it than using Hawaiian bat guano. lol

Time to dig up the chitty compost thread.
Last summer I used compost when I planted my flowers. Just a little to each little potted starter plant. Works miracles. (serious)

Assateague sent me some hot peppers last year. Habaneros and them super hot Trinidad Scorpion peppers.
Saved the seeds from a few. Started them and every one germinated.
So I'll be growing some chitty compost assapeppers this summer.
