If you saw the puddle I hunt, you'd know that was a very lost soul.

The gun looks like it's been through hell and back.

Isn't that the gun that got dropped to the bottom of a pond or something?

Looks like the dog had hell getting that bird too. Looks like some gumbo mud.

It's a circa '90s HK imported 20ga Benelli Montefeltro that's been "rode hard and put away wet" quite literally:

Well, the coyote did flip it out of the boat and into the pond while trying to climb in, but it never made it to the "bottom". I found it with my knee. Ours is largely floating marsh to begin with, and my pond is little more than a wide spot in our boat trail, down which our predominantly easterly winds push humus until it finds a home in the catch basin of that wide spot. Thus, it's become "The Mudhole" and in dry years an "intersting" project for man and beast:

First you grind up the vegetation with a Go-Devil prop:

Then you grind up the humus "black dirt" that rises to the top:

Over and over and over again:

Until you have something that looks like water:

But isn't:

Olly, it's my intent to disqualify myself from competition with multiple entries. Thanks.

If I tried that here in the People's Republic, I'd most likely get a fine for "destroying wetland" or some such.

I think that is the most bad ass gun picture I have ever seen.

Your mud makes me ill...we have a version of it here, a fat boy like me always gets stuck in it. Hate that shit.

I prefer to think of it as "wetland restoration," though it's not a spot ducks actually use under any conditions. Been going there daily in season and a great many days out for over seven years now and actually moved ducks from it three times for sure and maybe a fourth. But a good many pass and can be tolled to it.

The little 20 has been a faithful partner, but this is without question my favorite picture of it:

Believe it or not Rick, your dog is what has changed my opinion on CBR's.

I would love to meet him some day.

He takes his ambassadorship quite seriously and schmoozes everyone who hunts with him:
Image

Whole lot more folks want him in their hero shots than yours truly. Not that I blame them. But all of my Chessies have broken the stereotype and won over a cadre of friends. As with anything else, the good ones just don't get the press the bad ones do.

Damn Rick! You run a skinny boat! What is that, a 38" or 42"?

Think dogs call it "living large".

It's a 16x38 or 44 Go-Devil with a 16 horse "crawfish" (shorter than the long tail) tail Go-Devil that lets us go - and get back out of - places in the floating marsh where I'd not want anything else short of an airboat. (Which is why I've passed on our bigger and more powerful stuff.)
