You'll be fine with one mallard call. You don't need a backup necessarily. I keep my calls inside my jacket and hardly have a problem with sticking. That being said, a backup is never a bad thing to take along.

DH you're in Arkansas, realunlucky is in Utah, a little different climate.
Yes, realunlucky, your calls can freeze, if they are hanginmg on a lanyard outside of your clothes. When you are in an area where the birds are moving a round fairly regular, just lightly blow into your call once in a while, to keep it thawed and keep your hand cupped around it real good between calling. Sticking it inside your clothes is going to require far more moving around and motion is a duck hunters worst enemy.
I would strongly suggest you take Tiler_J's advice and go with a reputable guide for a real good taste of what it takes etc.

Sorry, I missed that bit of information QH.

You mentioned your daughter was 8 and wanted to do this with you? Get a duck whistle for her as well. Tell you what, pm me a mailing address I'll send you a 6n1 whistle for her and a CD by Phil and his boys. The whistles are very easy to use and it will give her some more involvement than just sitting and waiting.

Blessings,
Rick

Under his avatar and name there should be a "send message" option. Click it and should take you where you need to go.

I saw on the dwr site mallards are the most widely distributed duck and that teals are the early arrivials and coots are most common. Not sure what a coot is damn Im way behind the power curve with no clue what is what.

Got your pm, had to wait before I could let you know. Wound sitting on am interview board after work till noon.
Anyway its packed up and I threw in a double reed for you both to play with.
Coots..... Coots are your friend in some places. They are like a confidence bird for other ducks and we generally find that where you find coots you find the others.
Now I can't speak to how they eat but I know, some that swear by them. Just havent tried tried them myself.

I use coke or milk when I cook it. Just test it out and see what you like best.

Here's a thread about it, as you'll see there are varying soaks used you just have to find the one that works for you.
I usually do a brine soak for 3 days changing the water out twice a day.
I want to try dry aging some this year if we get some good enough weather.

I always soak mine in saltwater for a few days to remove the blood. Then soak it in coke or milk before I cook it.

That's why Olly made this forum. It's for serious discussion only. Feel free to jump in on some of the other threads too. This site is a lot of fun, and you'll pick up some good ideas along the way.

Soak them in a brine. Water, lots of salt, vinegar and spices. The salt will help draw the blood out of the meat, the vinegar will help tenderize, and the spices will add to the taste.

I always just soak them in salt water for 2-4hours. Then I fry them in butter and add some spices as I'm cooking.
