So this my 2nd season duck hunting. We hunt in a marsh on the ES of MD. We shoot at ducks with steel but they don't die. We see were hitting them but they just take off. We're using 12 g 3inch steel #4. We patterned our guns using Carlson creamator modified choke and shoot trap for practice. Killing ducks with steel is like trying to kill a bear with a whiffleball bat. So what's the big secret? What am I missing? Thanks.

If you are hitting them with steel 4s at 40 yards or under and they're flying off, you're hitting the duster, instead of the handle. Only thing wrong with steel is that it gives guys what they think an excuse for poor marksmanship or range estimation.

Hmm good to know. I thought I was crazy guess I'll keep plugging away and try to shoot more ahead of the bird.

Had an old Canadian say “ya got ta shoot ‘em in da head dere bub” when talking about killing geese. Put some more lead on them.

Or "where the corn goes in, not out".

Lol great info. Shoot them in the head. Seems like common sense has escaped me. It's a habit to aim for the big part. I'll put more of a lead on them. Thanks.
