Piebald speck?

I've had this pic in my phone for a while and can't remember if I've posted it here yet. Thought boot and gadwall would like it. A guy I hunt with shot this speck in a spot I've hunted many, many times - I've never seen anything like it there.

5th generation snow/speck cross. You can tell it's not a 4th generation because there is no white on the primaries.

Can't blame him. You can say anything with certainty no matter how bullshit it is as someone will buy it.:)

No, I'm serious this time. When I got into snow geese big time many moons ago, I read a lot. There was a study done on Southampton Island in Hudson Bay where they breed and nest by three ornithological biologists from Nunavut, paid for by the University of Calgary. They were interested in the cross-breeding among species, since it seems to be far more common in snows than any other species of goose. They found that it was possible to track the genetic lineage, as long as one of the mating pair was a pure snow goose (they tried to track hybrid to hybrid matings with DNA testing, but found that the markers were too similar to give any sort of statistically significant result). The dominant gene through the first three breedings was always that of the snow, although they had no idea why. At the onset of the fourth generation, it "flipped" the opposite way, with snow goose genes taking the recessive role. They found that only the primaries and upper tail coverts remained white. Going into the next generation, the outbreeder took over all but the scapular and some spinal feathering, but even that was mixed. They found no 5th generation hybrids which maintained any "pure" snow characteristics. Thus, what you've got is a fifth generation snow-speck cross, the great-great-great-great-grandson of a snow who was raped by a speck.

Key to a good lie is not to use too much information. You just blew it.

I would have been disappointed if anybody but Dale had believed it. It's not the initial belief, it's the convincing after the fact that's fun. Just didn't have enough energy last night. I blame the Taco Bell. And the Robertsons.
