Pretty sure Dan's right. And even the 100k-150k seems a bit high. One of my supervisors has been twice. And his retired CHiPie dad has been four times. His dad has a little trophy room similar to that. My point...CHP salaries can't afford a million dollar trophy room

Very nice at any rate!

That's only 10kish a trip. Maybe if you bare bones it and not including getting the animal back and mounted.

No way. Trust me - I was less than 24 hours from wheels up when my oldest son got hospitalized, and I cancelled the trip. I've priced it all out.

Here a price list from the outfitter I was booked with, and prices are pretty much unchanged since 2009.
http://www.hunttrophiesafrica.com/price-list.html

From the picture I see 2 trips to Africa and possibly 1 to New Zealand, unless those were shot on ranches in Tx/Az, hell - all those could have been killed on ranches in the US.

The more I look at those pics, he could have been all in, including transport and taxidermy for $60-70k

I've been once and dropped right at 40 on it when everything was said and done.

Yes I suppose you are right Reb.

If we assume that he shot one animal in each trip, and hunted 10 days each time, he might have spent half a million.

It's like everything else in this world, the variables are unknown.

When I look at a dozen plains game mounts, none of which are "exceptional" trophies I have a real hard time biting on the million dollar figure.

It's pretty generally accepted that you can do a plains game hunt in SoAfrica cheaper than a brown bear hunt in Alaska.

Not me. Been reading stories of African safaris since I could hold a book.

Ruark? Hemingway? Harry Selby? J.A. Hunter??

Someday.

Only one I've read (against my will) was Hemingway, and that dude died from a fucking thorn scratch. Eff that continent.

No your right, going back and looking at the mounts it was at the absolute most 500kish and very well could've been considerably cheaper if done in 3 ir less hunts. I killed a cape buffalo and a an ebok(however it's spelled) in a 7 day trip.

I don't like Africa. It has never held any sort of appeal to me, at any point in it's history, nor do any of the animals there, or the idea of a safari, hold any sort of appeal to me.

In light of this, if you still think I would enjoy it, I will certainly give it a try, since I love to read.

Figured I'd ask. I feel the same way about South America/the Amazon basin, but really enjoyed River of Doubt.

This year, he's going to Russia for an ibex. Can't afford the Marco polo

Horn of the hunter is just a story of the Authors first safari - I enjoyed it, but I like his writing.

You might like Hunter by JA Hunter. It's his auto biography and he was famous as one of the PH's that really sparked the safari boom in the post war years. His accounts of stalking Elephants, Cape Buff's, and wounded leopards make the hair stand up on the back of my neck and break out in a sweat.

No where near half a mil is my bet. You can go to Africa and shoot 8 animals in 10 for about 10k.

The largest of the antelope species. Aren't they around 2000 pounds?

The Lord Derby eland is actually the largest of the antelope species and adult males can weigh between 880 to 2,200 lb.
