New Shotgun?

What scatter guns are you using?

I want something that I can use for pheasant, duck, quail, and dove during the season, as well as 1 or 2 rounds of sporting clays a month. If firing pins are the only concern, my gunsmith makes them for pretty cheap.

Your choice is just that, but breaking O/Us for loading can be a nuisance in some blind situations, and a blued O/U has over twice the reflective surface of a single barrel to think about in others.

(That, and the dang things won't shoot three times.)

The blinds I've hunted out of have been no prob with my o/u, a smaller blind, maybe. Solved the glare problem, has not affected the numbers of birds I kill. The 2 shots seem to have slowed me down and make them count. Throwing in another for cripples has not been a problem.

That's what they all say...except the guys rebrushing the blind or looking down the barrel of one brought into the blind for loading. They're a genuine PIA in the pits we hunt. Always wanted a O/U 28 for upland, though. Just need a lot of other things worse.

(Not near as much fun to pick on them w/o HNTFSH and Swampbilly in the mix.)

My gun is out of the blind when I shoot, it stays there to reload, very easy. Unless you are shooting out of a foxhole.

The only time I use mine for ducks is standing next to tree in wood duck hole. And that's just sometimes. I like an auto far better for all situations. If a blued barrel is spooking your birds, hide better or go home.

Once saw a deer poacher's rifle barrel flash on the far side of our hollow before I realized he was dressed like a giant pumpkin.

"Common sense," like "common knowledge," is too often just common. My observations came from long experience. If they've not been an issue in your situation, that's great. But they have been in mine and could well be in the OPs.

Past clients I've not seen in years sometimes greet me with the axiom, "Grass is gold." because I'm such a stickler about maintain cover. And for one of that bent, one of the few things more irritating than a thoughtless soul breaking grass laying his gun across the top of a pit is one breaking it even lower loading a break action gun over the front of the pit. Ironically, this was the first photo I found showing my setup:

Being a side-by that doesn't break as deeply as an O/U was a plus, but any points he got for that were lost in the blast of the coach-barreled 10ga.

Here's a front view of what we're trying to preserve:

But I do apologize for the HNTFSH thing. Know that's a sore point with some of you.

Breaking the grass down is a very bad thing, we believe in concealment too. On Christmas you must wear a "santa" hat and you are not allowed to sit down and hide from the ducks.
