Browning A5 question.

Not the new one the old one, I've always liked them and shot a friend of mines a few years ago and want to get one.
My question is what should I look for when buying one?
Did they ever come with barrels taped for chokes? What were its best year(s)?
Sent from my phone.

They quit making them of course in '99, mine is a '93 and actually have an invector plus barrel with screw in chokes. The standard invector chokes were released in early 80's and then they improved it to the invector plus in the mid to late 80's. This would be a backbored barrel and overbored. I haven't tested the two against each other but the plus is suppose to throw better patterns especially with steel. If you do find one make sure they have the friction rings installed properly especially if it's a mag and they have been running 3'' through it. My mag can be finicky with 2 3/4" but drenching the friction rings with oil helps it feed 1 oz loads and eats up 1 1/8oz. To me they take some getting used to and I have a very hard time going back and forth between my silver and Auto 5, need to take the stock to a be fit sometime to solve that. Going rate seems to be around $700 from most asking prices but you should be able to beat that by a bit with some shopping around.

If you want to shoot steel you need to get a Japanese one. They were fitted with invector choke tubes. The one mag I have seen in the field was essentially a bolt action with dove loads. Wouldn't cycle them worth a shit and we made sure the rings were set right.

Love my ole belgium made Mag 12, Theta Sue. Started shooting it when my benelli went down. Grew up shooting em and forgot how much I love it. And honestly I feel like I point, shoot and swing it better than my benelli. And I love the benelli. In the market for another myself in fact. Wanna pick up one with no sentimental value and have it dipped to make her a bay gun. Jarbo did this recently.

Edisto, my father used to shoot an older Belgium Browning, and when switching from low brass to high brass, there was a ring on the magazine tube that had to be reversed in order for it to eject properly. Might try that to see if that may be causing your cycling issue.

Auto, do you think I'm a fucking commie? I haven't shot a new one yet, though. There is no way it can beat the old ones..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wAPY84sR ... EWxhFhNVB_That video might help to get familiar with the gun a little.
Look for a crack in the forearm. It's pretty expensive to replace the forearm.

My choice would be a 50s model round knob Light 12, open the choke to LM and have at it. It will happen eventually.

A5 kick betty hard. Me no like that but they sure point and swing good. I passed on A5's for a Beretta 390. Very similar feel with way less kick.

Auto 5s are still very relevant. Bet you think the Model 12 is an overrated junker too.

Have seen a mess of boogered A5s and don't recall a Model 12 fouling up. But then, too, I've not seen many Model 12s in the blind...

They are only relevant because people won't let them die. They were revolutionary in their day and were obviously the stepping stone towards modern autoloaders, but step back and take a look at the defining features of the Auto 5 and try and find the same things on a modern auto. Outdated. The 1911 is still relevant, the Auto 5 is not.
